Woodsball is a classic term of the sport of paintball, where its athletes compete over large fields in a mostly natural setting. Woodsball, also known as woods paintball, is generally played over fields and lands untouched by man's bulldozer or other artificial machinery. Thought the name Woodsball maker you immediately conjure up the image of a player stalking his way between the trees in the woods, this game can be played in almost any natural setting. Players who compete in this game will be prepared to play through the weather elements, changes in elevation, thick brush, and rough terrains. One common aspect that unites most Woodsball fields is its large size. The fields are large, and players begin the game far enough away from each other to find hiding spots and avoid being seen, at least for awhile. Different players on a Woodsball team have different responsibilities, and each athlete starts the games with a particular designated position. Common Woodsball player positions include the Woodsball Scout, Woodsball rifleman, Woodsball Specialist, and the Woodsball marksman. Woodsball specialists usually will handle a sniper paintball gun or other machine that is unique to their position. A Woodsball Specialist may or may not be a marksman.

Woodsball Marksman. A Marksman is more commonly known as a paintball sniper. The sniper must have both the skill and the gun to be able to take out targets from a long distance away. A Woodsball Marksman carries a much lower volume of paintballs, both in his hopper and around his body. By carrying and shooting fewer rounds of paintballs, a marksman gives the opposition less of a chance to hear and see where his shots are originating. Also, because the sniper doesn't need to carry as many rounds on him or in a big hopper, he will have a much smaller profile that the opposition will have to search for in their field of vision.
The paintball gun of a Woodsball Marksman usually will have one of two distinct characteristics. First, it will have a long barrel, usually between 12-19 inches in length. The industry experts have reached a general consensus that a players long distance accuracy improves as barrel length increases, up to a certain point. Also, many sniper guns have smaller hoppers or hoppers that are designed to give players a smaller profile. Some sniper loaders are actually tube shaped and have a diameter only slightly larger than a paintball barrel. These leaders store paintballs horizontally one by one and feed paintballs into the marker on at a time. Some pieces of gear made specifically for the Woodsball Marksman include the Ricochet 2K. Ricochet Sniper LED and the Rhinotech Sniper Wiper Squeegee.
