Playing Tight - Paintball Tactics
Playing tight is a strategic maneuver where a team makes their profile as small as possible, so that their opponents have the smallest possible target to shoot at. Playing tight may mean staying on the field longer, which gives your team the opportunity to accomplish the game objective. Playing tight affects the way you move, the way you shoot, the way you run, and even how you hold your paintball marker. Playing tight won't guarantee that you will never get eliminated but it may keep you out of the dead box longer. Playing tight is a general strategy for players to use that comes through experience and playing the game. To accomplish this goal, players need to constantly think about keeping their body compact and making sure that their arms, legs, and gun are not sticking out of the side of a bunker. Generally, any part of the player's body or gun that gets tagged results in the player's elimination. This includes a player's mask, shoes, and marker. When you play tight, you make yourself into the smallest possible target no matter where you are on the course. Listed below are a couple of paintball tactics that players can use to accomplish this strategy.

- When shooting around the side of bunkers, make sure to keep your elbow in. Players should generally try to keep their elbows in when they are running and shooting, or when they are standing and shooting.
- Look around the side of bunkers, not over the top. Players give away less of their head and profile by peeking around the sides of bunkers rather than over the tops of them.
- There are some bunkers that will require players to kneel or crouch to avoid getting tagged while shooting from behind them. Some of these kneeling bunkers include the Temple, Wings, and Cube. These bunkers or barriers pose various challenges to the player, especially the challenge of making sure that none of his profile is exposed to the opposition. When crouching behind a bunker, make sure that your elbows, knees, and feet aren't accidentally exposed.
- Keep in mind that you and anything on your person is a target of the opposition and can cause you to be eliminated. This includes your uniform, paintball footwear, tank, hopper, and paintball marker. When shooting or holding your marker system, try to visualize any part of it that could be seen by the opposition. If your opponent can see it, he can shoot it. Make sure that your pod system, tank, loader, and marker are not showing more than necessary.
Playing tight is a strategy that encompasses all the player's movements, not just their shooting posture from behind a bunker. When you are on the move, try to do many of the same things you would do when hiding behind bunkers. This means keeping your elbows in, and keeping your arms and marker system close to your body.
Always try to pay attention to the entire field, including what is to your sides and behind you.
