Defensive Tactics - Hold That Flag!
The teams that are successful at the game of Hold That Flag utilize a number of skills, including cunning strategy in the bidding process, and well conceived offensive tactics and defensive paintball tactics. Defensive tactics for the game of Hold That Flag will be different than for games where points are tied to the number of eliminations one team can get on another. Points for games like these are based on a single objective, not on individual eliminations. It doesn't matter even if all the defenders in this game are eliminated so long as the flag is not touched when time expires on the game clock. This game has a few key elements that affect the defensive tactics that are used in the game. First, the holding team is defending the flag against two teams, making them outnumbered 2 to 1. So against these odds, it is not a matter of if the defenders around the flag with fail, but when. Second the time that the attacking teams will have to take the flag is limited, and player eliminations will not affect their point scoring, so they usually make a very aggressive push for the flag from the start of the game to the finish. So the defense will have to defend themselves from more of a face to face attack than they would encounter in other types of games. Before we go further into defensive tactics for this type of game, let's go over the rules of the game.

The games begin with a group of players being paired off into three teams, and a single captain to represent each team. One team starts the bid saying that he can hold the flag X number of minutes. Then the captains rotate, either by increasing the bid number, or calling the previous bidder by saying "then Hold That Flag!" If the next captain says, "right, let's see you Hold That Flag!" then the team that made the highest bid takes their place to defend the flag station and the game begins shortly thereafter. The bid is the time in minutes that a team says they will be able to hold the flag. To hold a flag means to keep a member of the other two teams from touching it. If a member of one of the two attacking teams touches the flag before the bid time has expired, then each attacking team receives 1 point. If the defending team manages to hold the flag, they get 2 points.
Defensive Tactics: You have made the highest bid, and now you will get your chance to Hold That Flag! All defenses must revolve around the single objective, which is the protecting the flag. Generally, since their main focus revolves around the single object, more players will cluster around the flag stations then you would see in a classic Capture the Flag game. Defenders will focus almost all of their energies protecting lanes that run towards the flag, and they will not go out searching attackers very often. It is the captain's job to position the defending team so that all routes to the flag are well covered. It only takes one attacker to slip through the crack to take 1 point away from the flag holders.
Players do whatever it takes to defend the flag, sacrificing their own bodies if necessary. Since the defenders are outnumbered 2 to 1, they should generally try to avoid direct confrontation since the numbers are against them. The defenders wait as long as they can to engage the enemy, especially since they must only hold the opposition back long enough to delay them from reaching the flag.
