Bonzai Charge
Bonzai is a call of the warriors from the Far East as they go into battle. The Bonzai charge of the warrior was the call to go into battle with reckless abandon. Japanese soldiers would often call bonsais as they would march forward into battle, with the resolve that they were willing to die for their country.

The bonsai charge was a tactic made famous by Bill Barnes, of paintball Strategies & Tactics. During a bonsai charge, a paintball player will wait behind a bunker, and let the enemy has fired first. The player will wait for the opponent to fire, and then go charging straight at them screaming and hollering. Just think of Han Solo screaming and chasing the storm troopers in Star Wars: A New Hope. Or think of Sam Gamgee backing up the ones in Mordor as he was grunting and moaning. The acts of screaming during your bonsai charge serves to scare you opponent, making it harder for them to reload or fire an accurate shot. The sight and sounds of a crazed paintball player coming directly has the ability to distract the average person. The distracted paintball payer may be so startled by this direct assault that they are unable to return fire from even close range. This can give the person at the head of the bonsai charge an easy shot at close range.
A bonsai charge could be especially useful at the moment where the enemy is trying to reload. Reloading is a complicated process where the paintball player must select a capsule from his uniform and fill the paintballs into his paintgun hopper. If a player is interrupted in the event of a bonsai charge, it may cause the player to drop most of his paintballs or distract him long enough so that he is unable to return fire.
The bonsai charge is most effective in games where our opponent has a paintball gun that takes a significant amount of time to reload. Back in the early days of paintball, the paintguns were equipped with a bolt action of the left side of the chamber. Unless you were an experienced player, it could take up to 4 seconds between shots. If you were 6-10 seconds away from the player, the bonsai charge could buy you a couple of seconds, and allow you enough time to get within range. The modern era was ushered in with the pumpgun. In the pumpgun, there was a pump mechanism to work the bolt, which made reloading much faster.
Although the advent of semi-automatics and pumpguns has shortened the time it takes a player to reload, the bonsai charge is still a valuable skill to learn.
Two Essential Elements to the Bonzai Charge.
- The most significant element to the bonsai charge is the loud scream. The louder and crazier the scream, the more time it will take for your opponent to regroup and gather himself.
- When you find yourself within range, make your shots count. Hold your fire and make your first shot count. If you fire a ht and miss, you may become a victim rather than bonsai master.
Remember that no matter how load you scream, your opponent will eventually gather himself and be ready to reload & fire back. Don't lead a bonsai charge if it will take you more than 3-5 seconds to get within range.
