The World Record Holders in track and field competitions are some of the most celebrated athletes in the world. The athletes that hold these records are revered as the most physically gifted athletes in the world. The winner of the 100 meters and 200 meters is considered the fastest athlete in the world. And the winners of the heptathlon and the Decathlon are thought of as the most well rounded athletes in the world. The decathlon athletes must be strong, fast, agile, and have an amazing level of endurance to run the 1,500 meter distance race. The track & field record holders run the fastest, jump the highest, throw the farthest, and are able to maintain a high velocity running over very long distances. IN this article, we will take a look at some of ht world record holders and their respective track and field events.

100 meters. The 100 meters is an all out sprint. Where a track runner runs at full velocity out of his starting blocks for 100 meters. The record holders in early 2007 was Arafa Powell for the men, and Florence Griffith Joyner, with a time of 10.49 seconds.
200 meters. The 200 meters is also an all out sprint for the entire race, but in this race, the runners begin on one of the curves of the track. The race begin on the first curve, and ends on the second straightaway. This race is much more complex than the 100 meters, which is a straightaway through the whole course. Michael Johnson set the world record in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 with a record breaking time of 19.32 seconds. Florence Griffith-Joyner also broke the record in the women's 200 meters with a score of 21.4 seconds in Seoul Korea in 1988.
400 Meters. While the 100 & 200 meter runners run at full speed over a relatively short distance, the 400 meter runner sprints the entire race. The record holder for the men is Michael Johnson at 43.18 seconds, and he set this mark on August 26, 1999. Marita Koch clocked in at 47.60 seconds, setting the record fort he women in 1985.
