Whitewater Kayaking
Whitewater Kayaking is in the field of nautical sports that includes sailing, sailboarding, and ocean surfing. While many sporting events take place over flat, rectangular playing areas or calm waters, whitewater kayaking courses feature rough waters, upstreams, and downstreams. Some Whitewater Kayaking competitions are one player events, while others include two rowers in the Kayak. Championship rowers in the two person event include Joe Jacobi and Scott Strausbaugh who scored gold medals in the Barcelona Olympics. In individual competitions, Richard Fox was a 5 time K1 World Champion in the slalom event. Like in freestyle skiing, winning kayakers are both physically strong and physically flexible, as well as well trained and strong in the technical knowledge of the sport. The course may be natural or artificial that the rower must go through. While events like the snowboarding giant slalom involve racers going around the gates of the course in Whitewater Kayaking rowers must pass between the gates.

The origins of the sport comes from North American natives who navigated rough river waters in canoes starting hundreds of years ago. An appreciation for the athletic achievements of the Indian natives grew into a sport with modern kayaks over challenging streams and white waters. Today's whitewater slalom race is a test of both speed and accuracy in which rowers must use their skill to pass between a series of vertical pole gates. To paddle through some gates, rowers must actually turn around and paddle upstream to get through them. Like paintball which surged into popularity recently, Whitewater Kayaking only became an official event in the Munich Olympics in 1972.
Whitewater Kayaking events include individual and team competitions. Each course includes between 20 to 25 gates that the person must pass through. The paddler must not miss any gates, nor should he touch any of them with his boat or paddle or body. While traveling through the course, the paddler must go upstream through the red gates, and downstream through the green gates. There is a judge at each gate to score whether each paddler has cleanly passed through. In addition to the gate officials, there is a chief official that manages the entire staff and makes all final decision. In addition to this large officiating staff, there is a team of safety personnel to monitor the event and assist racers if their safety is comprised. This 7-8 person staff of safety personnel are equipped with cables, harnesses, and flotation devices so that they can respond with aid should the need arises.
In events like Street BMX, a players best score is taken from multiple passes through the course. But in this event, a player goes through two passes of the same course, with the cumulative times of both passes added together for their final timed result. Players are assessed with a two second penalty for touching a gate, or going through it in the wrong direction. Kayakers are penalized 50 seconds for missing a gate completely. Athletes are welcome to study the course before the event so that they can come up with a winning strategy for the race.
The Kayak and Paddle. A one player kayak is between 4 meters and 4.6 meters in length, and painted at both ends. The rower gets into the kayak in a hole in the middle, and he sits in the board upright, with his legs nearly flat. A spray skirt between the kayaker and the rim of the kayak keep it from filling up with water.
