Weightlifting
While some sports like swimming and road racing are ideal for athletes that are lean and tall, weightlifting athletes are built for power. With a weightlifter, the most developed muscles are his quadriceps, trapezoids and abdominal muscles. The goal of all weightlifting routines is for the lifter to take a steel bar from a ground position and lift it clean over his head. The tow main weightlifting disciplines are the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Weightlifting events take tremendous concentration, and the sport's athletes may lift a total of more than 20 tons in a single training session. The routine up until the final push takes a tremendous concentration, and the sport's athletes may lift a total of more than 20 tons in a single training session. The routine up until the final push takes a tremendous exertion and can cause the heart rate to skyrocket to over 180 best per second. The apparatus of the weightlifting events is the steel bar with lead weights attached to either side. The steel barbell is about 2.2 meters long and weighs about 25 kg for the men. The women's barbell is 2.01 m long, weighing approximately 15 kg. The steel barbell is about 25 mm in diameter and can be easily gripped by the male and female athletes.

The Weightlifting Event. Weightlifting involves two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Athletes are grouped into different categories based on weight, like in boxing. Lifters announce their starting weight and have three attempts per weight. If a lifter makes a successful attempt, he moves up to a higher weight for the next attempt. To increase the weight, lead weights are attached to the two sides of the steel bar, and secured with collars so that they won't slip out. The lead weights range in weight from .25 to 25 kg. Each weight has a specific color. The weight intervals available are .25 kg, .5kg, 1.25 kg, 2.5 kg, 5.0 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg, 20 kg, and 25 kg. The shoes of the lifter have a raised, cushioned heel to provide the stability needed to accomplish lifts.
Before make their first attempt, the athlete announces his weight to judges and then tries to execute the lift. The weightlifting athletes has 3 attempts per weight. Weights must be increased by at least 25 kg after a successful lift. An athlete must be alert, as they have 1 minute from when their name is called and when they must begin their attempt. IN the weightlifting event, an athlete must perform both types of lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. In the final scoring for a weightlifter, the highest weights lifted for each discipline are added together for a c\cumulative score. The lifter with the highest total score wins the event.
Although the techniques differ for the snatch and the clean and jerk, the weightlifter's muscular actions are almost the same for the two lifts. The snatch is the most difficult, because the action of pulling the barbell off the ground and raising it over the weightlifter's head is done with one movement. In the clean and jerk, the lifter bends at the knees and clutches the barbell with both hands. In the clean portion of this routing, the athlete pulls the barbell up until it is just above his waist. In the next movement, the lifter transfers himself under the bar while he moves back down into a squat position. In the final part of the routine, the jerk, the weightlifter pushes with his legs thrusting upward while he pulls the bar straight over his head. He stabilizes the weight by locking his arms, shoulders, knees and ankles. Paintball is another sport that requires hours upon hours of strength training.
