Triple Jump - Track & Field
The triple jump is similar to the long jump and that the athletes must take off down the runway and jump as far as he can down the landing area. The difference in the competition is that the athletes must perform three jumps from the takeoff board instead of one. The athlete may take the three jumps in any length that he wants, but the most successful athletes space out these three leaps fairly evenly.

The triple jump was probably not the performed event of the ancient Olympics, but the long jump was. In the nineteenth century, the Irish fashioned their own version of the long jump with a triple jump that consisted of a pop, a step, and junk landed on both feet. The triple was added to the English track and field championships in the 1875 and included a modern version of the event with the athletes approaching the takeoff board with a running start. Prior to the 1875 English championships, some versions of the triple jump include the hop, skip and jump made from a standing position. By the start of the modern Olympics in 1896, the triple jump was a staple of track and field and was included in the Olympic Games.
The Triple Jump - The Sequence of Events.
To commence the sprint around the runway, the athlete can begin from any starting point, but most choose a distance of about 40m from the takeoff board. Athletes accelerate for about 6 or 7 strides, then perform a controlled acceleration. This is one significant difference from the long jump where athletes hit the take off board at maximum acceleration. In the triple jump, an athlete would lose their balance if they hit the takeoff board at maximum speed.
The next series of events in the jump sequence are the hop, step, jump, and landing. The hop takes place as the athlete touches the takeoff board with one foot. He hits the board without looking at it to maintain a high rate of speed. In the step section, the athlete pushes off with one foot and is followed by the knee of the jumper coming up with his other leg. The step jump is performed with the athlete jumping as far as possible. In the jump part of the sequence, the athlete jumps off one foot. The jump part of the sequence is the final jump and the maneuvering while in the air and landing are similar to the long jump. In the landing section of the sequence, the jumper brings his arms and legs forward as he is about to make his impact with the landing dirt. Olympic and world championship caliber athletes are able to make landings as far as 18 meters between the takeoff board and the landing area.
Scoring and Judging
Like events such as the shot put, athletes have three attempts, with the 8 best attempts advancing to the next round. In the championship round, each of the 8 finalists are allowed 3 additional attempts. In the triple jump, there is usually a judge at the take-off station, and one in the landing area.
Some famous athletes in the triple jump include Viktor Saneyev of the USSR & Adhomar Ferreira da Silva of Brazil.
