Trampoline, Tumbling, Double Mini-Trampoline
The sport of gymnastics is comprised of 4 main disciplines, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, competitive aerobics, and the trampoline. The trampoline is a discipline where athletes are able to achieve great heights, as high as 8 meters for the trampoline, and 2.5 meters for the tumblers. The trampoline event takes place over three apparatuses: the trampoline, double mini-trampoline, and tumbling track. These disciplines require athletes to have great muscular strength, and they must be b flexible enough to hold certain poses while in motion and going through the air. The event was first created for trapeze artists to have a safety net for their performances. Later, the trampoline was used as a training tool for American soldiers as they prepared for World War II battles. The trampoline became an official Olympic event at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The three types of events will be analyzed in this article.

Trampoline. This discipline is the most similar to the trampolines that we see in backyards today with its square springy bed on a raised platform. In this event, athletes execute aerial routine while maintaining complete control of their rebounds. In this event, the athletes perform 2 routines of 10 tricks. This event features individual competition and two person synchronized competitions. The trampolinist must perform 10 different tricks in their within one routine. The first round of this event usually features 20 or more athletes. At the end of all three routines an athlete scores are added together. The athletes with the 10 best scores move on to the finals round. 7 judges and one referee score the routine, with a perfect performance giving the athletes up to ten points. Points are added for the athlete staying inside the jump zone and performing all of his tricks in the order that they were presented to the judges before the routine. Points are deducted in this event if the athlete loses control, if his feet hit outside of the jump zone, and if the order of tricks are not executed in the positions announced. With advances in the understanding of neurological functioning and technological advances in trampoline technology, athletes can new jump higher than ever before. With these new height capabilities trampolinists are presenting more complex and more difficult tricks in competition.
Double Mini-Trampoline - The entire course of the double mini-trampoline consists of two runways cut in the middle by two trampolines. In this event, the athlete makes a run towards full speed down the first runway. When the trampolinist approaches the first trampoline, he jumps in the air and connects with the spring with both feet. Once connecting with the first trampoline, he leaps into the air, performing his first trick. His first trick may be a back somersault layout, or a forward somersault layout. At the conclusion of the first trick, the athlete lands in the middle of the second trampoline where he launches himself into his second trick towards the end of the second runway. At the conclusion of this double Mini-trampoline routine, the athlete tries to land just before the line marking the end of the landing area. The trampolinist is penalized for landing outside of the landing area.
Tumbling. The tumbling routine also consists of a runway and a landing area, but the entire runway in this event is a springy track.
