Track Cycling
Track Cycling is one of the most interesting cycling events, as the matches are run on wooden tracks of a shape that are similar to those in track and field. Unlike the track and field lanes, the track cycling tracks are banked at the curves so that racers can stay on the course. As the 19th century passed into the 20th, popularity in bicycle racing soared, and event organizers wanted to create a spectator sport for those events. As bicycling became more popular, event planners created a closed circuit track for track cycling and timed events. The first official race on a closed circuit track to feature track cycling was played in Saint-Claude France. The first wooden tracks appeared in the United States, Germany, Cologne, France, and Paris. The first two races were relatively short, between 1 and 10 km long, but soon, much longer races were added. The later endurance races would sometimes last between 12 to 24 hours without interruption.

Track cycling has produced some of the most challenging endurance contests in all of sports. In 1878, England premiered a six day race, where track cycling contestants would ride six consecutive days, paused by only brief rest periods. Around the same time, spectators began being treated to short distance speed races. Some of these short speed races were called the sprint and the 1 kilometer. Track cycling events such as the Olympic sprint, match sprint, and the Keirin have been featured since the premiere of the first modern Olympics in 1996. In the last 50 years, the sport has expanded and diversified to include track cycling events such as the team pursuit endurance event, and the individual pursuit individual event. Technological advances have enabled the cyclists to take the turns at greater speeds, making the games more exciting.
The sport of track cycling has become very popular in the last 100 years. The track has become especially popular in Japan, with the Keirin, a race that draws large crowds, for wagering, and for admiring the athletes. The Keirin is an exclusively male event that was premiered in Japan in 1948. The Keirin is a race of pure speed, with nine cyclists competing for first place in a 2 km race. The Keirin begins with the racers coming hard off the starting line and racing up to the motorcycling traveling ahead of them. Once behind the lightweight motorcycle, the riders travel behind him for 3 to 5 laps. The track cycling riders travel at the speed set by the motorcyclist, until the motorbike leaves the course. When the motorcyclist leaves the track, the racers move into full speed and sprint until the end of the race.
Another popular race in the sport is the match sprint. The match sprint is a short, 3 lap race, during which only the final 200m are timed. When the racer reaches the final 200m, hears the start signal.
