Track Cycling Events
At the turn of the century (1900) the sport of cycling became very popular. The beginning of 1900 was a very exciting time where people began to see the first skyscrapers, cross country railroad tracks, and even the first automobiles. This is also a time where people got to see their first modern Olympics in 1896. From the start of the Olympics, track cycling events have been involved to wow the people, and show them some excellent matches. Creation of the bicycle has led to the creation of road racing, bmx, track cycling, and mountain biking as popular sporting events.

The Track Cycling Course. Race times, point scoring, placement on the leadership board, and team placement vary between events. Some events like the involve all out sprints over short races, while other races last hours and are tests of pure endurance and the will of the athlete. No matter what track cycling events you are watching, the goal of the race will usually be the same, to ride faster than your opponents, and to cover as much ground as possible while you are riding. The track cycling course is similar to a track and field course, in that it is a closed circuit track with two straight-aways with two cars at the ends. The track cycling course, like in track and field, is also 400 meters at the inside part of the track. The major difference between the two courses is that the curved ends of the tracks. While the track and field course is flat all the way around, the track cycling course is banked at the curves, so that the cyclists are able to take the turns at a moderate rate of speed, and still stay on the track. The two tracks also both differ greatly in their track surfaces. Both tracks have surfaces that are ideal for the machines that are traveling on them. In the track and field course, the material is usually synthetic rubber or polyurethane that are ideal for gripping to cleated running shoes. The track cycling course is composed of wooden tracks, that grip well to the rubber tire of the bicycle.
Track Cycling Events
There are two main categories of track cycling events: the endurance events, and the sprint events. The endurance events range from three to sixty kilometers. The sprint events range from 500 m to 200 km.
One popular endurance event is the individual pursuit. The individual pursuit features two racers competing against each other, starting from the middle of one straightaway, and the first cyclist to get to the finish line wins. The men's individual pursuit is a 4 km race. The women's individual pursuit is a 3 km race.
In the speed or sprint category, you have the Olympic sprint. The Olympic sprint features two 3 rider teams covering three course cycles. Each rider must lead his team for one full lap. The team clock stops once the third rider crosses the finish line at the end of the third lap.
