The Track | Track Cycling
Like baseball and football, cycling has become a favorite pastime of American culture. Cycling has become a popular recreational event, as it is an exercise that can be enjoyed starting right outside of your driveway. All you need is your spirit and your bicycle, and you have a machine that can take you across town in 10 or 20 minutes. With such a great sport and activity comes a large base of cycling enthusiasts. And with such a large base of enthusiasm for any sport comes an interest in seeing the best players in that sport play. In the field of cycling, the main events are road racing, BMX cycling, mountain biking, and track cycling. The track cycling arena is shaped much like a running track, with its two straightaways, and curved ends which complete the closed circuit. Track cycling is the only standardized cycling event where the course dimensions is the same no matter where you play, and it is an event build for spectators to watch.

The Origins Of The Track Cycling Track. The first closed circuit cycling track held their first races and the 1868 in Saints-Cloud France. Other similar events premiered in the U.S. and other European countries shortly thereafter. The first two races were relatively short, between 1 and 10 kilometers long, but other races were much longer and would take as long as 24 hours to complete. England even had a Six Days Race where it's riders would continuously pedal, with only short rests across the entire event. There are now a number of different types of events, including the Team Pursuit, the Olympic Sprint, the Points Race, the Kieran, and the Match Sprint. All of these events take place on the amazing track cycling track.
The Track. Since the turn of the second AD millennia, three track links have been standardized: 250m (short track) and 333.33m and 400m (long track). The tracks are between 7 and 9m wider allowing room for players to pass one another during games. Towards the middle of the first straightaway, you have the pursuit lines, that is the start and finish lines for pursuit events. At a short distance from the pursuit lines you come to the finish line, which is the finish line for all events other than pursuit events. If one of the finishes at the finish line is really close, there are a series of photo electric cells placed along the finish line that records the arrival of all the racers.
Across from the finish line, on the other straightaway, there is a visible 200m line. In sprint events, the clock starts when a racer reaches this line. The track surface that the cyclists ride over is composed of long wooden tracks that run perpendicular to the interior of the field. Within the wooden track section there are several lines that indication the position cyclists should be in at certain points in their respective races. The Pole Line and the Sprinters Line run parallel to the interior of the track. The first line in from the interior, the Pole Line is the official distance the racers must cover. The sprinters line shows where racers must be positioned during a sprint. Just inside the wooden part of the track, the Blue Band (Cote d'Azur) is laid out. This part of the track is used for the warming down sequences of Madison races.
