Synchronized Swimming
Synchronized swimming, unlike swimming is a team event, where athletes perform an artistic routine in unison. Synchronized swimming is the only aquatic sport where athletes perform their routine to choreographed music. Competitive aerobics is another sport where a team athletes perform their routines to music. Competitive aerobics is another sport where a team of athletes perform their routines to music. Like rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming is a sport performed exclusively by women. Synchronized swimming became an Olympic Event for the first time in the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. The Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) recognized synchronized swimming for the first time and incorporated this event into its program. Synchronized swimming became an official Olympic event in the 1989 Los Angeles Olympics. Synchronized Swimming has individual and group competitions. Synchronized swimming is one of a number of aquatic sports that also includes water polo, apnea freediving, and diving. While diving events are always individual competitions, synchronized swimming is the lone aquatic sport that includes artistic team events.

There are three types of synchronized swimming competitions: solo, duet, and team. All swimmers in these vents perform various artistic maneuvers in the water to a prepared music routine. Individuals or group swimmers perform to routines in this event: a technical routine, and a free routine. In the technical routine, solo swimmers have two minutes, duets have two minutes, twenty seconds, and teams have two minutes, fifty seconds. In the Free routine, solo swimmers have three minutes, thirty seconds, duets have four minutes, and teams have five minutes. Both the technical and free routine is scored on technical and artistic points. In the technical routine, technical points are worth 40% of the total, and artistic points are worth 60 percent of the total. In the free routine the technical mark is worth 40%, and the artistic mark is worth 60%.
When both routines have been executed, the scores for the two events are combined: the technical routine is worth 35%, and the free routine is worth 65% of the total. The player, duo, a team with the most points wins the event. Prior to performing the events, the judges and technical monitors are given the sequence of events for their entire team. The judges and technical monitors are given the order that the elements will be executed in. Three technical monitors watch the technical routine to make sure that the figures are in order. Synchronized swimmers are penalized two points for going out of order in the technical routine or if they support themselves on the side of the pool during the routine. In this event, swimmers perform two routines for the judges: the first technical, the second free.
Synchronized swimming is a blend of ballet, gymnastics, and swimming. The official guidelines and rules for synchronized swimming can be found on FINA. FINA stands for Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur. Margaret Sellers was one of the founders of the sport, who developed a dance and swimming in the water that they called ornamental swimming.
