Swimming Strokes and Variations
Swimming and diving have been important athletic events going all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Swimming began having organized, competitive races going all the way back to 1603 in Japan. Swimming has been part of the Olympics since the first modern Olympics in 1896, and it has been a part of the World Championships since 1977. Swimming events are speed events, the time that it takes each swimmer to finish the course is recorded, and the swimmer with the fastest time wins. In swimming competitions, racers must swim a defined distance. Most races take place in an Olympic size pool, 50 meters long by 21 meters wide. Olympic sized pools have 8 lanes for 8 swimmers, with a number of judges, timers, and officials surrounding the pool. The judges decide and report the placing of the swimmers, they make sure that they don't false start out of the starting block, and they make sure that the athletes perform all of their strokes correctly. Some championship swimmers have included Alexendre "Sasha" Popov from Russia who has earned 4 Olympic Gold Medals in various swimming events. Men and women compete in 4 strokes: breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

He Breaststroke, Backstroke, Butterfly and Freestyle differ in the position of the simmer's body (prone or supine) and the position of the athlete's hands so they go into the water. Some races combine all four strokes (Medleys). The goal of all of the events is to swim the defined distance faster than anyone else, and touch the Electronic touch pad at the end of the pool. The pre-event starts with all of the competitors getting up on starting blocks and preparing for their dive into the pool. At the starter's first signal, the swimmers take their positions on the starting blocks. When the simmers hear the second signals, they dive into the pool. All swimmers must stay in their own lanes throughout the race. If a swimmer makes a false start off the starting block, he or she is disqualified. Also, swimmers must perform the stroke of the event that they are competing in correctly. In all 5 different races, there are 4 stroke judges that check to make sure that each swimmer is performing the stroke legally. Here are the 5 stroke disciplines and some brief descriptions of them.
The Crawl. The Crawl is the stroke that you usually would use when exercising as a regular recreational swimmer. This stroke produces the fastest times, and it is usually the preferred stroke used for freestyle swimming. Freestyle swimming events where a swimmer can use any stroke that they want to t. In this disciplines, the legs remain just below the water, and propel the body forward using flutter kicks. The arms push the body forward as they are alternately lifted forward and then pulled through the water. The swimmer breathes in when his head is over the water and to the side. The simmer breaths out when his head is under water.
The Backstroke. The Backstroke is the only swimming discipline where the athlete does not begin the event from the starting block platform. In this competition, swimmers get ready for the start signal holding the Backstroke starting grips on the starting block, while his feet are propped against the wall of the pool. When the swimmer hears the start signal, the swimmer pushes off, and alternately propels his body forward with his back to the bottom of the pool.
Swimming and paintball events both take place in indoor arenas, with a number of judges surrounding the fields to make sure that the players are playing within the rules.
