Swimming - Aquatic Sports
Swimming is an ancient athletic activity, as you only need a person and a body of water. Swimming was a celebrated athletic event going all the way back to the times of the ancient Romans and Greeks. While many of the track and field events we know of today began being played as organized events in the middle 19th century, swimming was revived as an athletic event in 1603. In London in 1832, the first swimming leagues and associations began being formed in London. The Association Metropolitan Swimming Club was founded in London in 1869. The Association Metropolitan Swimming Club that same year developed various swimming events, rules and regulations that became published and universal. Swimming was included in the first modern Olympic games in 1896 over three distances: 100, 500, 1,200 meters. Until 1924, all swimming races took places in natural bodies of water. In 1924 swimming races moved to indoor pools for the first time. In 1908, the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) was created with 10 member nations. The 1924 Olympics included swimming variations for the first time. The swimming variations at the 1924 Olympics included the freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke.

Women began to compete in swimming events for the first time in 1912. Today, the biggest swimming events that take place are in the Olympics, which take place every 4 years, and the World Championships which are held every two years. The 25 meter World Championships for swimming events have been held every two years since 1993, now taking place in even-numbered years.
The Pool. An Olympic sized swimming pool is 50 meters long, by 21 meters wide. The depth of an Olympic sized pool is always 18 meters. The water must remain at one level and the temperature is expected to remain at 24°C. The pool is separated into 8 lanes, with each lane 2.5 meters wide. The lanes are separated by floating lane dividers. Starting from one end of the pool, the floating lane dividers must be a different color every five meters. Lane lines run down the middle of each lane. Each lane has a starting block on the outside of the pool. In all swimming races but the backstroke, swimmers jump off of the starting block platform into the water when the official gives the start signal. The start signal is usually a gun or electronic tone. Each end of each lane has electronic touch pads. The Electronic Touch Pads are sensitive to the touch of the swimmer, and they score the time that the swimmers compressed. The touch pads are linked to a timing system programmed to stop the clock when the simmer touches them.
Referees and Judges. The referees and judges record the time of the athletes, signal the starts of the race, and make sure that the players adhere to specific guidelines. The referee is responsible for the other judges and makes the final decision if there is a dispute. The starter has full control of the simmers from the time the referee turns the swimmers over to him until the race is over.
The stroke judges make sure that all of the athletes are performing their swimming strokes correctly. The strokes involved in these races include the crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, and Medley. In the Medley, swimmers must swim each stroke for at least 5 meters. The 4 strokes are the freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke. Another aquatic sports event is the Medley relay. Paintball and swimming both involves tests of speed and endurance.
