Swimming Competitions
Swimming competitions are one of a number of aquatic sports. Swimming competitions take place in an Olympic sized pool. Each Olympic sized pool is 50 meters long by 21 meters wide. Pool depths in Olympic pools must be at least 1.8 meters, allowing swimmers good depth for them to dive into from the starting block without hitting the ground. Swimming competitions have been Olympic events since the first modern Olympics in 1996. In these competitions, swimmers must swim a defined distance in the shortest possible time. Men and women compete in 4 strokes: breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle. Races like the Medleys combine all four strokes. During these swimming competitions, there are a number of judges surrounding the pool to make sure that all of the swimmers are performing their strokes legally and make legal starts off of the starting blocks. Turn judges make sure that the turns are legal. The finish judge decides and reports the placing of the swimmers. And the stroke judge makes sure that the swimmers' heads are above the surface of the water when they pass the 15 meter line. Here is a look at the various Olympic speed competitions.

The Crawl. The Crawl racers travel the fastest, and it is considered the perfect stroke for springing. The Crawl is the most natural stroke. The Crawl is usually the stroke of choice in a freestyle race. In a freestyle race, swimmers can choose any stroke that they want to. To start this event, the swimmer dives up and out hitting the water at a 45° angle. The swimmer drives out from under the water with strong flutter kicks. The swimmer then moves forward, alternately pulling his arms forward and driving them down and under the body, propelling the body through the water. While the arms are moving, the swimmer continues his flutter kicks, with his legs just below the surface at the water. The swimmer breathes in when his head is turned all the way to the side. The swimmer breathes out when his head is under water. Crawl Competitions of more than 50 meters, swimmers must efficiently execute the flip turn to be successful in the event. When executing the flip turn, the swimmer drives his body downward towards the bottom of the pool and somersaults. In the middle of the somersault, the swimmer hits the side of the pool with the bottom of his feet, and he drives off the side of the pool and begins to swim in the other direction.
The Breaststroke. The Breaststroke is another swimming discipline where the athlete starts from the top of the starting block. When the swimmer hears the starting signal, he pushes off with his legs and his body is fully stretched. The swimmer in this event is only permitted one stroke under water before he must surface and begin the Breaststroke technique. The Breaststroke involves 3 major lateral movements of the arms. The beginning of the stroke is the outward pull away from the body, followed by the downward pull down towards the bottom of the pool, followed by the inward pull towards the body. In the kick, the legs propel the swimmer and return to their initial position.
Paintball and swimming champions both have well developed upper body muscles. Swimmers must use their arms and shoulders to speed down the lanes, while paintball players may go hours in scenario games holding guns that carry heavy harness and air tanks. Some popular new paintball products include the Halo B 35 and the new Invert Mini from Invert Paintball.
