Soccer
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. The sport of soccer is watched by close to a billion people every year, and soccer stadiums in Europe host over 100,000 soccer fans in some places. While soccer is a distant fifth place among American sports in popularity, it is the most watched and most played game in the rest of the world. The most popular soccer stars such as Edson Arantesdo, Nascimento (Pele) and David Beckham are international celebrities. The game has brought millions of fans to stadium to support their home teams, and brought a great recreational sport to millions of adults and athletes.

The first club, Sheffield Football Club, was formed in 1963, and the first competition, the Football Association (FA) Challenge Cup, was organized in 1872. The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904. Soccer was added to the list of Olympic events in 1908, ten years before the Red Sox won their first World Series. Soccer is popular for a number of reasons. First it is a simple game and the game is easy to understand. It is pretty easy to join a soccer league, and there are may different leagues to suit your skill level. While competition style soccer games have 11 players on the soccer field on each side, games can be enjoyed in much smaller groups and can be played in any grassy area. While hockey fields and baseball fields need elaborate rinks and diamonds, soccer can be enjoyed in parks and fields in 3 on 3 scrimmages.
Another reason for the popularity of soccer is the World Cup. Almost 2 billion soccer fans watch the World Cup last year, and the sport is still growing in many countries. Most of the worlds countries participated in the soccer world cup last year and most of its games were internationally televised.
Players on the Soccer Field
During a World Cup game, there are 11 players on the soccer field including the goalie, the only player on the field that can use his hands. The players on the field include the goalkeeper (goalie), sweeper, stopper, and defensive midfield, right back, left back. The goalkeeper is the only player that can use his hands on the soccer field. Players in other positions can use their hands for throw ins when the soccer balls has been kicked out of bounds. The goalkeeper is the last line of defense and is in a natural leadership position on the field. The sweeper is the next to last line of defense and calls for defensive formations and inserts himself into important situations as needed. The stopper has a more defined position as it is his responsibility to stop the forward most likely to take the lead in a scoring drive. While the goalie, sweeper, stopper, and defensive midfield must stay in defensive formations, the halfbacks are the most versatile players on the field. The right back & left backs play up and down the field, assisting on defense and scoring drives.
The players in charge of scoring include the right and left strikers, the right and left midfielders, and the attacking midfield.
