Snowboarding - Snow Sports
Snowboarding is a hybrid between skiing and skateboarding, and is a uniquely American event, at least it was started by an American. O you could say that snowboarding is a hybrid between skiing and surfing, as surfing is another sport where an athlete glides over a smooth surface while standing on a solid board. Like skiing, snowboarding involves players either performing speed races or acrobatic feats over snow. Both events take place as winter events and feature athletes that are both strong and agile. One aspect unique to snowboarding is the actual board. While skiing sports involve two skis that attach to an athlete's feet, snowboarders attach both feet to one board for racing or trick events. Snowboarding snowboards are latched on to an athlete during the entire race of course, as opposed to an event like skateboarding, where a rider must hold onto the skateboard while in the air during stunts.

Origins of The Game. The genesis of the game began with the American Sherwin Popper in the early 1960s. He first had the idea of combining two skis together. The first competitive events on snowboards took place in Leadville, Colorado in 1981. The International Snowboard Association (ISA) was created in 1989, before becoming the International Snowboard Federation in 1991. In 1995, the IOC decided to make snowboarding an Olympic sport. Snowboarding made its Olympic premier in 1998 in the Nagano games in Japan.
Snowboarding Events. There are several snowboarding events that can be grouped into two main categories, speed events, and acrobatic events from these two categories, there are 4 types of events: freestyle, alpine, free ride, and boarder cross. Among these events, two specific disciplines were premiered at the Nagano Olympics, the slalom competition, and the half pine competition. While the slalom has many similarities to the skiing slalom events, the half pipe is a competition that is unique to snowboarding. In the half pipe events snowboarders execute dazzling acrobatic maneuvers inside, up the sides, and over man made structures known as the half pipe. Like BMX Half Pipe, the racing games are referred to as alpine snowboarding. Alpine snowboarding has many similarities as downhill skiing, with man made manicured downhill snow slopes on a downhill incline. Only with alpine snowboarding, an athletes source of transportation is his snowboard. Some alpine snowboarding events include slalom, giant slalom, and parallel, or duel, slalom events. Most alpine snowboarding events are timed, and players must use their balance and lower body strength to make smooth tight turns.
The Makeup of A Snowboarder. Let's face it, snowboarding looks cool. Like a surfboarder, a snowboarders body is constantly in motion and a great 'boarder looks like the slopes belong to him. The design of a snowboard also allows its rider to make acrobatic spins and maneuvers that would be impossible with regular skis. The possibility of acrobatics that the snowboard offers draws athletes who are thrills seekers, fearless, and daring. Like paintball, snowboarding is one of a number of sporting events that has exploded in popularity in the last 25 years.
