Shot Put | Track & Field
The Shot Put is another track and field event where the athlete must throw the projectiles as far as possible. The projectile thrown in this competition is shot with weights about 7.3 kg for men and 4 kg for women. In this event, an athlete must propel the shot out of the shot put fan and as far into the landing area as he can.

The shotput and other track and field throwing events have origins going back further than the ancient Greek Olympics where a warriors ability to throw a weapon long and far was prized. The shotput competition is directly descended from throwing a heavy stone, as not all soldiers were wealthy enough to brandish a sword. After cannons were invented in the 14th century, cast iron balls replaced the uneven stones. The ball throwing tradition was picked up by the English and integrated into their track and field events around the mid 18th century. The men's shot put premiered the first modern day Olympics in1896 and for women in the London Olympic games in 1948.
The shot put competition is performed with the thrower beginning and ending his throwing sequence within the shotput fan. The shot put fan includes a throwing circle that is 2.135M in diameter. At the end of the throwing circle, the athlete launches the shot down the landing area. Two judges on each side of the landing area raise a white flag signaling a good throw, or a red flag for a throw that is out of bounds. The landing area fans out from the shot put fan at an angle of 40°. The shot putter must remain inside within the shot put fan before the ball lands on the landing area, or the attempt will be not good. In recent times, a stopboard was added around 1910 to give athletes a point of support for their foot. The stopboard is about 10 cm higher than the inside of the circle.
Olympic and Competitive Game Action. The shot put competition begins with a first round where all players make 3 attempts. The 8 athletes with the best throws advance to the next round for another 3 attempts. If competitions start with fewer than 8 competitors, they are allowed 6 throws each. Most competitive events have at least two judges stationed at opposite sides of the landing area to judge fair and fowl calls. An attempt is no good if the thrower steps outside of the shot put fan or if his foot touches the top of the stopboard.
There are two popular techniques that players use to blast that ball as far as they can from the starting point. In the O'Brien Technique, the player begins with his back to the stopboard. This position allows the player to rotate and build up speed and energy for his final thrust outward. The O'Brien Technique begins with the athlete bending slightly at the knees, one hand holding the shot just above one shoulder and the other arm stretched out. The athlete crouches down and begins to build up energy like a spring. The athlete then coils around and pushes up at a 40° angle. The athlete thrusts outward with a full extension in his throwing arm.
The Baryshnikov Technique is the most popular technique today. The Baryshnikov Technique uses a stance and throwing style similar to that of discus throwers, so that the throwing arm is traveling at a high velocity upon release.
