Scratch Race | Track Cycling
Track cycling is one of a number of cycling sports that also includes road racing, bmx, and mountain biking. Track cycling is the only cycling event that takes place on a wooden track. Track cycling is the only cycling event that occurs over a proportional track that has two straightaways and two curves at the end of the straightaways. Track cycling is probably the least known cycling events in the United States, but it is still very popular in countries like England, Japan, and Scotland. Track cycling events are run in a number of different formats, including the scratch race, Madison, and Keirin. The bicycle that is used in the race is specifically designed for track cycling. Many of the tracks for track cycling are located in indoor arenas, but some are built in outdoor arenas. The bicycles for these events are built to cut down aerodynamic drag caused by the bike and the body of the racer. The rider in these races also use a tactic called drafting to reduce wind resistance and drag. The tactic of drafting can either be a team exercise, or it can be used to take advantage of the rider in front of the cyclist. Drafting is also known as the slipstream effect. When a cyclist uses this maneuver, he gets into position behind the leading racer, following him just a few inches behind the rear wheel. The lead rider creates a path of low wind resistance behind him, allowing the drafting rider to go faster.

Using the drafting maneuver, several cyclists on the same team often ride together to form a paceline. Each rider takes turn in the lead position, which requires more strain on the muscles, but then get the benefit of the lowered wind resistance when all of the other riders take the lead. This teamwork is often known as the paceline technique. The paceline technique allows a small number of racers to maintain their lead over a much larger pack. A track cycling rider who rides against a maximum drag for an entire match could have to exert much more energy than a group of riders using the paceline technique.
The Track. In the last 20 years, three track lengths have been standardized: the 250 meter (short track) the 333.33 meter medium track, and the 400 meter long track. All standardized tracks are between 7 and 9 metes wide. The wooden tracks that the riders race on are smooth and run perpendicular to the interior of the track To allow the riders to take the hard turns on the track without slowing down as much, the curved sections of the tracks are banked. These tracks that have significant banking at the curved ends are called velendromes. Though most velendrome tracks are designed with long wooden planks as the riding surface, some surfaces at other arenas have included asphalt and event low cut grass. Some famous track cycling athletes have included Tony Rominger, Francesco Moser, Major Taylor, and Jacques Anquetil.
the scratch race and paintball are both sports that have many individual variations and events. Track cycling includes several race formats, including the scratch-race, Team Pursuit, and Miss and Out.
