Road Racing | Cycling
Road Racing of cycling sports is one of the oldest sports to be played in front of an international audience. Included in the category of cycling sports is road racing, track cycling, BMX, and mountain biking. The Tour de France of track cycling is the most famous cycling race for a number of reasons. First, The Tour de France involves smoething htat most Americans are familiar with, bicycle riding on roads. To bike ride, all you need to do is to own a bicycle and go to the end of your driveway. The other cycling sports involve either elaborate arenas made for their specific sports on risky terrains that put riders in a certain amount of danger. But road racing athletes basically ride on car roads just like the roads that we ride on with our bicycles. But that is not to say that road racing athletes are riding the same way we are. IN a road racing event like the Tour de France, the riders pedal for 20 straight days for total lengths of 3,000 to 4,000 kilometers. Road racing is one of the most physically demanding sports. Races are long and very intense, requiring great effort from the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The riders in the cycling event pedal had through all of the stages, and the events require great effort from the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

The Tour de France is the world's most famous road racing events. Though most of the race occurs over smooth driving road surfaces, there are a number of challenging sections of the circuit race that have broken some of the fittest athletes. Along the way, the riders must cross the Alps and the Pyrenees mountains. The Alps and the Pyrenees can make or break the athletes. Some rides that have gotten off to early leads in the Tour de France have lost first place while being overtaken in the grueling uphill climbs into the mountains. Lance Armstrong in a number of his Tour De France victories was able to take back first place by gaining time on his challengers in the steep up hills. Lance Armstrong is famous for seven straight Tour de France victories, beginning in 1999 thru 2005. Other past Tour de France champions have included Miguel Indurain of Spain, Jan Janssen of the Netherlands, and Henri Cormet of France. Maurice Garin also of France, won the first Tour De France in 1903.
The Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a Espana are three road racing cycling events that together make up the Grand Tours. All three events of the Grand Tours are stage races that are held over a number of days (2 to 22) on a predetermined course. The Giro d'Italia has 22 stages in a nearly 4,000 km race. Past winners of the Giro d'Italia have included Carlo Galetti of Italy, Hugo Koblet of Switzerland, and Gasta Petterson of Sweden. The Italians have dominated the Giro d'Italia, winning nearly every race since 1953. Other road racing cycling races include Time Trials, Classics, and Circuit Races.
Road racing and professional paintball events are both very popular in Europe, with several established leagues. The Pan-European Paintball League has five majors that take place yearly in Europe.
