Road Racing Techniques
To be successful in events such as the Tour De France and the Tour of Italy, cyclists must learn the most effective road racing techniques. While cycling events like the track cycling involve short or long races on flat, closed circuit tracks, road racing events such as the Tour of Italy involve road surfaces that include natural steep inclines and descents, wind, and other weather conditions. To be successful, riders must use road racing techniques that include positioning their body to decrease wind resistance, and riding behind the other riders to minimize wind resistance. Successful road racers are built for incredible endurance and the resolve to cover up to hundreds or thousands of miles in a given race. Below is a list of some popular road racing techniques that champions have used to stay competitive.

The Breakaway. The breakaway occurs when one or several racers breaks away from a pack to put a great distance between themselves and the group. It takes a great amount of exertion for one racer to breakaway, as he must pedal so much harder than the group to compensate for the decrease in wind resistance that he will not enjoy as part of the pack. It would be considerably easier for 3 or more teammates to breakaway together, as they can benefit from each other, and take the benefit away from the group or individual that they were leaving behind.
Climbing. Climbing occurs on a relatively steep incline, when a rider takes his posterior of the bicycle seat, and stands on the pedals. The cyclist pumps the petals while standing on them, shifting the bicycle to the right and left as he pushes with his legs as hard as he can.
Descent. When a rider starts into downhill, he puts his posterior back on the bicycle seat, and he puts his body as low as possible. The cyclists hands are on the bottom of the handle bars, and his upper legs are close to his body. The riders body is straight and parallel to the ground, and his shoulders are at waist level. On a steep descent, racers can sometimes reach speeds of over 80km/hr.
Column Formation or Fan Formation. This technique is used to cut down on the wind resistance in front of the rider, and give him more power. In a fan formation, a cyclist in a group rides directly behind another rider to cut down on wind resistance. Two cyclists in a race may take turns leading and following, working together to each get 50% of the race with lower resistance runs. In a column formation, the lead rider bears the heaviest burden, as he has no protection from the wind. In a supportive family formation, the leading rider then falls to the back while another rider takes the lead position.
Using all of these road racing techniques allows riders to cut down on wind resistance, allowing them to conserve as much energy as possible.
Paintball and road racing are two events where teammates must stick together to win their respective matches throughout long competitions.
