Rhythmic Gymnastics: Gear and Apparatuses
Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport where athletes use different apparatuses such as ribbons, balls, hoops, and ropes, to smoothly transition from one move to another. The rhythmic gymnastic athletes flow from each movement with grace and athleticism. While artistic gymnasts can be either women or men, rhythmic gymnasts are women only. This sport is a combination of dance and gymnastics, and the female athletes perform various athletic maneuvers while twirling clubs, ribbons, ropes. Though the sport has been around for nearly 100 years, the sport did not become well known until around 1950. The first competitive events took place in 1948 in the USSR, and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) first recognized it as a professional sport in 1962.

The Events and the Apparatuses: Rhythmic gymnastics is performed with 5 apparatuses: two clubs, a ribbon, a hoop, a ball, and a rope. In all of these events, the props must be twirled or spun gracefully while the gymnasts make various leaps and somersaults. All apparatuses except for the clubs are props in Olympic events. Rhythmic Gymnastics has individual and team events. In the team events, often called group competitions, 5 athletes perform on the same floor together. The apparatuses and a combination of 4 main moves make up the routine that will be scored by a group of judges. The four basic body movements include the jump, spin, layback, and balance. Rhythmic gymnastics gear also includes slippers and a leotard for the female athlete. The slippers cover the toes but have no heel, optimizing the athlete's ability to complete her jump landings and spins. The athlete's leotard offers her a free range of movement, and a chance for the judges to see all of her excellent footwork and landings.
Ribbon: The ribbon is about 5-6 meters long, and attached to a light wand that the gymnast constantly twirls, to keep the ribbon constantly in motion. Through the gymnast's constant twirling of the wand, the ribbon continuously makes a series of spiral patterns while always staying in the air. Points are deducted if any part of the wand of ribbon hit the ground. Two popular body movements that the athlete performs while twirling the ribbon are the spin and the layback.
Hoop: The hoop is about 80-90 cm long and is very light, weighing about 30 grams. The hoop is usually held with two hands or it is spun and kept in the air with the athlete's body. The hoop is always to remain on the ground while the athlete goes through her series of body movements. The hoop can be handles in many ways: rolls, throws, rotations, and the athlete passing through the ring.
Clubs: The clubs weigh about 150 grams and are 40-50 cm long. The clubs are barrel shaped on one end, and have a small sphere shaped knob at the end of the end. Choreography and rhythm are emphasized with the clubs with throws, twirls, and asymmetrical movements.
Ball: The ball is about 18-20 cm wide and weighs about 400 grams. The gymnast displays her grace and flexibility by going through a series of complex body movements while she holds the ball steadily.
Rope: The primary body movements with the rope are skipping and jumping.
