Track Relays: 4X100 and 4X400 Meter
The Relays: 4X100 and 4X400 meter are one of the only team events in track and field. In these two relays, a runner starts running a distance and hands a baton off to the next runner. The fourth runner gets a handoff from the third runner and then races to the finish line. The team that finishes in the shortest amount of time wins the race. In ancient Greece, fast runners were used to transport important messages from city to city, though relay events were not included in the ancient Olympics. The first relay events in sports started with a 19th century event where American firefighters raced in teams and handed off a pennant every 300 yards. Two Pennsylvania professors transformed this event into the first official relay in 1893. These races were very popular in America, and the men's 4X100 and 4X400 meter relays were added to the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. The women's 4X100 relay was added to the Amsterdam games in 1928. The women's 4X400 meter relay was included in the track events in the Munich Olympics in 1972.

Running the Relay. Eight four person teams compete on the 8 lane track. In the 4X100 the baton must be exchanged quickly, and any awkwardness or dropped batons could ruin the team's chances. The runners pass the baton in a zone 10 meters before or after the 100m, 200m, and 300m lines in the 4X100 meter relay. In the 4X400 meter relay, the baton must be passed in a zone ten meters before or after the 400 meter line. When the passer approaches the passing zone, the receiver starts to move before the pass off to already be in motion when he gets the baton. The receiver begins to run when the passer is about 7 to 8 meters before the run up zone.
Passing the Baton. When the passer is two or three steps from the receiver, he shouts out telling him that he is ready to pass the baton. When the passer shouts out that he is ready, the receiver stretches his arm behind him. When the passer is close enough, puts the baton in the palm of his hands. The receiver than squeezes his band around the baton and secures it. If it is a good pass, neither the runner or receiver break stride.
Finish of the Relay. Once the baton basic your, he continues to spread for its maximum speed and maintaining for as long as the man. Passer makes sure that he stays in his lane, and does not leave it until he is sure that he will not interfere with the other runners.
Though all of the main rules between the 4X100 and 4X400 meter relay are the same, there are few differences. The 4X100 is a blind relay where the receiver keeps his whole body forward and holds out his arm for a pass. In the 4X400 meter relay, the receiver looks back to receive the baton from the passer. Because the 4X400 is a 400 meter sprint for the past year, he may be worn out by the end of his run. The automatic pass is too risky, and the receiver looks back to accept the baton.
Passing the Baton. As the passer makes his approach, the receiver opens his hand wide with his arm outstretched. The passer runs to the side of the runner, and the baton is passed in a downward motion.
The 4X100 relays and the 4X100 relays and tournament paintball are sporting events played by some of the most elite athletes in team competition.
