Sports are celebrated athletic endeavors that promote the health of the athletes involved as well as the spirit of team play. Sports and athletic achievement have been celebrated for many thousands of years going all the way back to the ancient Greeks. The ancient Greeks held the first version of the Olympics every 4 years as a celebration of the magnificence of the human body and its possibilities of human achievement. The ancient Olympics were revived in 1896 as the first Olympic games of the modern era. The modern Olympics is a non-denominational, non-political body that invited the greatest athletes in the world to compete in the worlds most popular sporting events.

Many of the sports of the modern Olympics focus on individual achievements, and many are team events. Some sports in the Olympics that are celebrations of individual athletic achievements include the Long Jump, Discus, Hammer Throw, and 400 Meter. Some sporting events where victory relies on team play include baseball, basketball, and soccer. The winning athletes or teams are rewarded with medals for first, second, or third place finished. First place finishes draw gold medals, second place draws the silver medals, and the third place draws the bronze. In Olympic events like the javelin, 100 meters, high jump and pole vaults, athletes compete as individuals and earn their own gold medal. In sports like basketball, baseball, and doubles tennis, athletes compete as part of a team. In these team events, medals are awarded to the team, and everyone gets their own individual bronze, silver, or gold medal.
Sports are an athletic activity that everyone can play and everyone can benefit from. Playing sports can serve to promote the health and well being of all individuals. While many of the sports people are interested include Olympic and professional matches, they are also for the common man. Playing sports can affect the physical and emotional health of everyone. For starters it is essential for kids and adults alike to get enough physical exercise to keep their muscles strong and for good cardiovascular health. Countless studies point towards a healthy diet, avoiding obesity, and getting plenty of exercise as important towards leading a long and healthy life. Though it is not necessary to play sports to get all of your exercise, if you need to get a good workout, why not do something where you can have a little fun in the process?
There are literally hundreds of sports to play in the spring, summer, winter and fall. Many of the sports played in the United States are Ball Sports. Ball Sports (small ball) include games like handball, Pelota Vasca (Basque Ball), field hockey, cricket, and baseball. Ball Sports (Large Ball) include the popular American Football, soccer, and Netball, Volleyball, and Beach Volleyball. Some of the newest sports that are growing in popularity are extreme sports, and the sport of paintball. Paintball is a sport for the mind and body and a team oriented game of player elimination.
