Olympic Gold Medal
An Olympic Gold Medal is the highest medal that an athlete can earn in the Olympic Games. The medals are handed out for the top three individuals or teams in a give event. An Olympic Gold medal is awarded to the first place individual or team, a silver to a second place, and a bronze to the third place team. A gold medal is an incredible vindication to some athletes for what has been for some, almost a lifetime of hard work for some athletes who began training since they were 10 years old. An while athletes in events like the decathlalon often receive national television exposure, big endorsements contracts, and TV jobs, for many the medal is their greatest vindication. In events like rhythmic gymnastics and rowing, often the greatest vindication of the gold medal is the knowledge that you were the best in the world at the time, and the honor of representing your country. In other events like the 100 meters and the heptathlon, the Olympic Gold Medal winner becomes a household name, as was the case with Michael Jordan and Mary Lou Retton.

Mary Lou Retton was a legendary medal winner for the United States in 1984 in Artistic Gymnastics. Mary Lou Retton in winning the medal epitomized the best in American will, determination, and Character. She was a fresh faced, girl next door type who had a beautiful smile and an infectious style. Up until the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, the Artistic Gymnastics events were dominated by the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In Los Angeles, Mary Lou Retton became the first woman gymnast to win a gold medal in the Olympic all-round title. In the overall artistic Olympic event, female athletes compete in the individual events for individual medals. The individual events include the freestyle floor exercises, balance beam, and vault, uneven parallel bars. Mary Lou Retton placed silver or bronze in four of these events, and she had the highest points totals, giving her the highest overall score. Retton's success in the Olympics enabled her to become a spokeswoman for political causes she supported, such as AIDS Research and Awareness and the Eastern Drugstore Chain Revco. Mary Lou Retton has been a national sportscaster for Olympic events, and she has been featured on Wheaties boxes.
The Olympic Gold Medal is the highest medal an athlete can win. It is made out of gold, which is one of the rarest and most beautiful metals. The medals are circle shaped, and designed to be worn around the necks of the winning athletes at the awards ceremonies. The engravings and designs on the face of the medals represent Greek heroes and past Olympic legends. Past gold medal winners include Ekaterina Serebrianskaya of Ukrain for rhythmic gymnasticks, Mitsou Tsukahara of Japan for the horizontal bar, and Yriko Ito of Japan for competitive aerobics.
When someone thinks of the Olympic Gold Medal, one thinks of palyers in the most prominent events like the Heptathlon and the triple jump. While the championship athletes in these events are deservedly honored, there are in fact Olympic events in so many different sports. There are even Olympic events for weightlifting, and Water Polo. Past weightlifting medalists include Vasili Alexeau of the Soviet Union, who broke world records in the 1977 Olympics. Hungary won the gold as a team in water polo in the Berlin games in 1936.
