The Mountain Biking: Bike and Equipment
Mountain Biking is an event that began in California, United States, and gained popularity quickly across the country. As bicycle parts and technology became more and more advanced, bikers now had the ability to ride over rough terrain at high speed without blowing out tires. In America's new age of mass production, the average person was now able to own a high performance bike that could ride over nearly any terrain or obstacle. While road racing events had been performed for nearly a century on European streets, in America, cyclists focused their energy on off-road cycling. In the hills and steep terrains of California, Mountain Biking became a popular new sport. Mountain Biking is a racing event with the fastest racer finishing the race first, no pace motorcycles are used like in Japanese Keirin. Unlike the mountain biking downhill competition, the cross-country competition is a very long race, up to 40 kilometers in length. In this article, we will detail some of the key features of the mountain biking bike and equipment.

The Bike: The mountain bike is somewhat of a hybrid between the BMX bike and the long distance road racing bike. Like the road racing bicycle, the machine has a series of chain rings that enables racers to change gears depending on the uphill or downhill slope. And like the BMX bike, the tires are wide and thick to absorb heavy impacts during downhill bumps and collisions with objects such as tree stumps and roots. Today's bike frame has the best of both worlds, it is tough but it is also lightweight. Today's mountain bike frames are composed of aluminum, chromoly (chrome and molybdenum), titanium, or carbon. Most wheels are made of an aluminum alloy. Three chain rings and a number of sprockets provide 18 to 27 different speeds. Most medium to high-end mountain bikes weigh between 9 and 11 kilograms. As important as the bike is, the biker's repair kit is just as crucial. Riders must be totally self-sufficient on the race course and must make all of their own repairs; no other people involved with the race can help them. The rider's repair kit is stocked with a set of wrenches, an inner tube, "spoons" to take the tire off the rim, and a container of CO2 under pressure to re-inflate the repaired tire.
The mountain biking bike has shock absorbers over the front and back wheels to soften hard impacts over rough terrain. The bike has a back brake and a front brake, which are attached to the moving part of the fork. Wheels for these bikes are wide, which is necessary for helping a player to keep his balance on rough terrain and for holding tires that will be strong enough to not pop under high pressure. These bikes have a specialized front fork system that enables the rider to keep straight and make the necessary turns over challenging terrains. The front fork has a special suspension, with an elastoner or air-foil system, that allows riders to continue to maintain their balance through steep drops and sharp turns. Three chain rings and a number of sprockets typically provide 18 to 27 speeds.
Mountain Biking Equipment: There is a whole set of cycling gear specific to mountain biking. For footwear, a rider has specialized shoes with a rigid knobby sole. This knobby sole makes it easier for the rider to dig into the pedals and not slip out of them. For eye protection, the rider goggles that wrap around the sides of the face to protect from loose sand, pebble, bugs, and tree branches hanging out over the dirt track.
