Mountain Biking
Mountain Biking is one of a number of cycling events where the rider completes a marked course in the shortest possible time. Other speed cycling events include the BMX Track Race, the Track Cycling Match Sprint, and road racing. Some cycling sports like track cycling take place over level, solid tracks especially made for their specific event. But with Mountain Biking, the course takes place over natural surroundings like dirt tracks, tree branches, and brush. Whereas events like the Tour de France occur on mostly asphalt roads, mountain biking tracks are found in a more natural environment, though some obstacles may be artificial. A mountain biking course will test not just a cyclist's speed and endurance, but also his ability to handle tricky obstacles without slowing down. Some of these obstacles may be natural or artificial. While the bicycle has been around for nearly 200 years, it was not until the 1970's that riders began organizing competitive racing events in steep, natural terrains. Gary Fisher and Joe Breeze, among others, are credited with creating courses specifically for the first mountain biking events. The first mountain bikers developed the sport in the mountains of California in the 1970's.

Technological advances in bicycle technology made the popular sport that we enjoy today possible. While road cycles are built to be light and handle smooth asphalt surfaces, mountain biking cycles are designed to handle heavy impacts and the various bumps and drops that occur in rocky terrains. The newest technologies enable mountain bikers to have a machine that is both light and durable. The frames of these bikes are composed of aluminum, chromoly (chrome and molybdenum) titanium, or carbon fiber. Most wheels are made of an aluminum alloy. To handle the steep rises and drops in the hills and mountains, mountain bikes are designed for 18 to 27 speeds. Three chain rings and a number of sprockets give the biker the ability to change to so many speeds. The weight of the entire bike is usually around 10 kilograms. Racers carry a repair kit that will give them the ability to fix most bike problems within the game. The mountain biking repair kit includes wrenches, an inner tube and "spoons" to take the tire off the rim, and a container of CO2 under pressure to re-inflate the repaired tire.
The Mountain Biking Race: While races like the Keirin take place over 2-3 kilometers, mountain biking races are long, usually from 25 to 40 km. And these kilometers include some tough climbs over steep hills and thick tree routes. This test of endurance takes place on natural terrain in a single day. The race begins with a group start, and the first rider to the finish line wins. The 25 to 40 km race length is designed so that the fastest racers will finish the course in about 2 hours and 15 minutes for men, and 2 hours for women. If the course involves a lot of very steep inclines, the course will usually be closer to the 25 km mark. If the course begins at a very high elevation, and includes a lot of downhill riding, the course will usually be closer to the 40 km mark. World Cup events take place in a 6 to 8 mile closed course. No referees or course officials may intervene in the event of a tire blowout or other mechanical failure; the cyclists must use their own tools and gear available to fix it themselves. Water stations are periodically located on the sides of courses for re-hydration.
Mountain Biking and paintball are two sports where players rely on the newest technologies to perform in games.
