The Modern Olympics
The Modern Olympics, the first Olympic games of the modern era were played in 1896 in Athens, Greece. These first games would also become known as the summer Olympics, and would include many events that were predominantly played during the summer season. The Modern Olympics are a series of games played every 4 years, where the best athletes in the world would compete in the world's most popular athletic events. The Modern Olympics have athletic and sporting events where representatives from all the nations of the world come to compete. Representatives from the nation's countries compete in individual or team competitions, depend on the particular event. For instance the 100 meter relay is a sport where individuals compete for medals. Baseball and basketball though are team sports where team medals are given out. For instance, when Russia wins a gold medal in soccer, the gold is given out as a team award, and everyone on that team gets a medal.

The Modern Olympics or the Olympic Games are an international multi-sport event that is held every 4 years, beginning with the first games held in 1896. The entire series that is known as the Olympic Games includes the summer Olympics and the winter Olympics. The Modern Olympics began as a revival of the original games, first held in Olympia, Greece until 393 A.D. The winter Olympic Games feature winter sports, and the summer Olympic Games feature summer sports.
While the Summer Games have been played since 1896, the winter games were not played until 1924. The Winter Olympic Games were originally played the same year as the Summer Games, but have been playing 2 years apart, beginning in 1994 (The Lillehammer Games). Many people are happy with this new format, because it means that we don't have to wait for years to see this incredible international series of sporting events.
The ancient Greeks were the founders of the early version of the Olympic Games. These games drew the most famous athletes in the world. Winners of the Olympic Games were held in the highest esteem, and their athletic achievements were immortalized in poetic verse and statues. The original games were also held every 4 years. The events were a celebration of the human body, and limitless nature of man's potential and achievements.
Though these events subsided with the Fall of Greece so long ago, the Modern Olympics were revived, due to the inspirational of people like Baron Pierre De Coubertin. The symbol for the Olympics is a series of five rings interlocked, with three on the top, and two on the bottom. The five rings represent the continents, and the interlocking is symbolic of the unity of all the continents and countries in the world.
The Modern Olympics is a secular, non-political, non-religious series of games that celebrates athletes and athletic achievements from all of the nations of the world.
