Madison Race
At the end of the 19th century, great breakthroughs occurred in the speed and ease of function of the bicycle. As more and more people bought bicycles and the sport grew in popularity, interest grew into turning bicycle races into arena games. While the sport branched off eventually into road races like the Tour de Italy and all terrain races like the mountain biking World Cup; there was also interest in closed circuit races. Out of this interest for closed circuit races, there sport of track cycling grew. One of track cycling's popular events was the Madison Race.

The Madison (paired) Race. The name of this race came from the location that this illustrious event premiered, Madison Square Garden in New York. This is a race of considerable length, with distances between 20 to 60 km. This race features 2 player teams, who take turns riding different length of the race. On tracks that are 333 meters or less, no more than 18 teams may participate in the race. In tracks longer than 350 meters, up to 20 teams may participate. While races like the marathon are distance races, the Madison Race is a timed event where teams try to complete as many laps as possible before time expires. In this race, both riders remain on the track for the entire race. The race begins with one rider pedaling slowly while the other cyclist rides at full speed. When the fast rider meets up with the other, the fast rider begins to pedal slower and warm down. The rider that was pedaling slowly then turns it on and begins to pedal towards maximum velocity when the other rider reaches him. This cycle continues, with the riders taking turns. It usually takes a rider about one and half laps for one rider to catch up to the other. The objective is to complete as many laps as possible within an allotted period of time. In the event of a tie between two or more teams, there are a number of tiebreakers that can be scored to rank each teams. During the race, riders are scored on points during intermediate sprints at specific times during the race. The final sprint counts for double points. The Madison Race has been a world championship event since 1995.
Relay Technique of the Madison Race. When the outgoing racer approaches the incoming rider, the incoming rider accelerates until they come up side by side each other. The outgoing rider then grabs a part of the bike, called the handline, on the incoming riders bike, and throws him into the race. One alternative to grabbing the partners handline is to grab the partners hand to launch him forward. Teams spend countless hours on this exchange so that the incoming rider can get the maximum benefit of energy from the outgoing rider's momentum.
One other track cycling race that uses this relay technique is the Six Days Race. The Six Days Race is one of the most challenging and grueling endurance races in the history of sports. While the marathon race is a continuous race over the course of 26 miles that takes place from 2-5 hours, the Six Days Race, in a nearly continuous six day race, with relatively few breaks for rest. This event premiered in England in 1878 in England.
In other sports, events taking place over days are also prevalent. In scenario paintball games, events can involve hundreds of people over the span of a week, or a weekend.
