Long Jump - Track & Field
The long jump is an event where the winner is the one who can jump the greatest distance from a takeoff board and into the landing area. Unlike jumping competitions like the pole vault, on the jump the athlete uses only his own strength and quickness to propel his body forward. In the long jump, the athlete launches himself forward from the takeoff board towards the landing area while traveling at his maximum velocity.

The track and field long jump is an event that goes as far back as the ancient Olympics, and in the later Celtic games. The popular jumping competition was featured in the more modern track and field competitions at Oxford in 1850 and in the Athens Olympics in 1896. The women's long jump made it's Olympic premier in 1948 in London.
The Long Jump-The Sequence of Events.
The long jump competition begins with each athlete getting 3 chances to make his best possible jump. The jumpers with the 8 top scores will move on to the next round, with each athlete getting 3 more attempts. The metal or other rankings will be determined by taking each runners longest jump.
The runner begins his long jump sequence by accelerating towards maximum velocity while taking long strides. The athlete reaches maximum speed just before takeoff. In the last two strides the athlete lengthens his stride. In the final stride, the athlete Plants his foot on the takeoff board, and pushes off with all of his power. The athlete raises his arms up over as head as he maintains his natural running motion. The athlete's continuous motion of his arms helps the jumper reach a maximum height and hang time.
When in the air, the athlete maintains his natural running motion in his arms. This helps to maintain his balance, and ensures that the athlete will not fall backwards upon landing. The jumping distance will not only be judged by where the feet land, but the closest mark made by him in the sand. When the athlete nears his landing he propels his feet straight in front of him, and leans forward at the head and shoulders so that he will not fall back. At the landing point, the athlete throws his arms and legs forward so that he reaches the furthest possible distance from the takeoff board.
In competitive long jump track and field, there are two judges, one to signal a proper takeoff, and one to measure the distance of the landing. For the take-off judge, he will watch the launch and make sure that the athlete does not touch the area in front of the takeoff board with any part of his foot. After each attempt the judges will raise a white flag for a technically sound attempt and a red flag for a violation. Long jump violations may include leaving a mark on the land of plasticine after the takeoff board, somersaults during the jump, or if he steps back in the landing area after a jump.
