Lance Armstrong is one of the most well known athletes in the world, he is famous for winning seven straight Tour de France events, from 1999-2005. Lance Armstrong won all 7 Tour de France victories after recovering from cancer in his testicles, lungs, and brain. During his career, Armstrong has raced for three professional teams while being sponsored for Motorola, Cofidis, U.S. Postal, and the Discovery Channel. In 2006-2007 Lance Armstrong retired from road racing after many professional stage victories and tour victories. Today, Armstrong holds the record for most consecutive Tour de France victories, breaking the record of Miguel Indurain of Spain. Miguel Indurain previously held the tour record with 5 consecutive victories from 1991 to 1995. Indurain is a very famous athlete of the road racing discipline, becoming the Olympic Time Trial Champion in 1996, and the World Time Trial Champion in 1995. Prior to the 7 year championship run of Lane Armstrong beginning in 1995, the tour had previously been dominated by European teams like France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain. The last non-American, undisputed champion of the Tour de France was Marco Pantani of Italy.
