Javelin - Track & Field
The Javelin is one of the more high profile track and field events, and one that goes all the way back to the ancient Olympics. The javelin is an art form where players drawer upon strength, style, impeccable timing, and hundreds of hours of preparation. In this event athletes throw the javelin as far as possible. The art of throwing the javelin has its origins in combat and hunting. The Greeks featured this sport as in their athletic events since about 700 BC, when an olive wood javelin was thrown in two events, with a sling and at a target. The sport that we largely recognized today was developed in Scandinavia. The event made its debut in organized competitions in the London games in 1908. The women's javelin was debuted for the first time in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The Javelin Event. If there are 8 or fewer competitors, each drawer gets 6 attempts. If there are more than 8, each athlete gets 3 attempts, and the 8 with the longest throws make 3 more attempts. A throw is scoreable if the tip of the javelin lands first, whether or not it sticks in the ground. To qualify, the thrower must make his attempt within 1.5 minutes of being cleared to throw. To qualify, a thrower must also stay in his/her throwing area until the javelin lands in bounds, tip first.
The javelin of today is about 2.60 - 2.70m long and weighs about 800g. The female javelin is about 2.30 meters long and weighs about 600g. The athlete throwing the javelin holds it above their shoulders at a cord grip at about the midpoint of the sphere. The javelin is the thickest at the cord grip with sharp tips at the shaft and tip ends. Previous versions of the spear were composed of olive wood but current versions are made of lightweight metal. The javelin is designed to be one piece and have no moving parts that would give any one player a competitive advantage.
The Sequence of Events. The athletes begin at the starting point already imagining the placement of their arm as they prepare to reach back and release the javelin at the end of the track. The athlete imagines how many steps he will take before he releases the javelin at the end of the track and the position of the arm holding the projectile with each step up to the release point. Before starting his run down the track the thrower holds the javelin at head level, with this arm and shoulder relaxed.
The athlete begins his run down the runway with 10 to 12 very quick strides, accelerating towards full speed. As the reaches full speed, he starts to pull the javelin back while building speed. At around the midway marker, the thrower begins to turn to his side and his legs cross to provide maximum amplitude for the throw. In the final moments, the feet touched the ground at almost the same time. The athlete pulls the javelin back as far as he can. The thrower gathers of all of this energy while loosening up his upper body muscles for the final launch. At the end of the runway, the thrower plants both feet, and the javelin is launched forward in a powerful thrust. An Olympic caliber thrower is able to throw the javelin over 90 meters for the male, and 65 meters for the female. Current record holders in this event include 115 meters for the male athlete.
Paintball and javelin players must both use conditional upper body strength to be successful in national and international competitions.
