Football
While baseball is often described as Americans favorite pastime, football has become the most watched professional sport in the United States today. There are a number of reasons as to why football has become America's most popular sport. First, the game has full on contact, and action on every play. Each play involves a player scoring a touchdown, kicking an extra point, kicking a field goal, or getting tackled. Along with footballs fast action and bruising tackling, the game has a lot of scoring. Typical football game scores are 20-17, 35-16, 21-27, etc. Football games are high scoring affairs, and a lot of points are scored during the games. Typical soccer games, on the other hand, may only see one or two goals scored during the entire game. For this reason, and many others, football and its championship, the Super Bowl, are the most watched in sports. Footballs Founding Fathers. Football was invented at Princeton University in 1867 as a variant of soccer. This soccer variant was called Princeton Rules, and was played exclusively as a college sport. This play between teams grew into the Ivy League, and later caught on with the rest of the country and beyond. In Canada, the Canadian Rugby Football Union, (CRU), founded in 1882, became the Canadian Rugby Union and organized a championship in 1892. In the US, the American Professional Football Association was founded in 1920. This Football Association was renamed the National Football Conference (NFC) two years later. While the NFC was growing, a rival league, the American Football League emerged as competition. Both leagues competed side by side for awhile, until the two leagues merged. The NFL still has two conferences that make up the entire league. The NFL has the national Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The champions of each conference play in the title game, The Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the most watched even in all of American sports. National brand name companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising for this football game, wanting to take advantage of the Super Bowls unprecedented audiences.
Football is a game of offence, defense, and special teams. On offense you have the quarterback, tailback, fullback, tight end, offensive tackles, center, guards, and wide receivers. The play starts with the center hiking the ball to the quarterback. Once this ball is hiked the quarterback usually hands off the ball to his running back, or he drops back to pass the ball. On passing plays, the quarterback usually passes to one of two or three wide receivers, or to one of his tight ends. The tight ends are very versatile and important for the quarterback as they can roll out to catch the ball, or drop back to protect the quarterback for passes to wide receivers.
On defense, teams must have football players versatile enough to plug up the line on running plays and run step by step with speedy wide receivers on passing plays. The key defensive positions include the defensive tackle, middle linebacker, defensive ends, outside linebackers, weak inside safety, strong side safety, and cornerbacks.
Special team's football players kick field goals, kick punts, make kickoffs, and attempt onside kicks.
