The dolichos - The Ancient Olympics
The dolichos, or the Ancient Olympic Games were some of the earliest national and international events dedicated to celebrating the possibilities of the human body and athletic achievement. The Ancient Olympic Games were the inspiration for the modern Olympic Games that began at the end of the eighteenth century. The Ancient Olympics were a series of athletic events held in the Greek town of Olympia, starting around 800 BC, and end around 400 AD. There were nearly 300 Ancient Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympics has an illustrious history and a merger of Greek Theology and the finest athletic performances that the world had ever seen.

There are many myths and tall tales associated with the origins of the dolichos. One myth is that these elite athletic events were for the benefit of Pelops, King of Olympia. Pelops was the hero of Peloponnesus, and the inspiration of these sporting events. The myth describes the triumph of Pelops over King Oenomaus with the aid of Poseidon, the god of the sea. The triumph enabled Pelops to win the courtship of Hippodamia, the daughter of Oenomaus.
A different myth surrounding the genesis of the dolichos centers around the legendary Greek hero Hercules. This myth tells of the athletic triumph of Hercules, and the re-enactment of his achievements through Olympic games every four years. Another legend details the heroic adventures of Zeus that later would inspire the games. In this myth, Zeus won a famous battle against his enemy, Titan Cronus. Still another legend surrounds the adventures of King Iphitos of Elis, and his epic wars based on his council with the Pythia at the Oracle of Delphi. To avert a destructive war, he was advised to premier a series of athletic games to honor and win the favor of the Green gods. The Spartan adversaries of King Iphitos were moved to cease fighting during these spiritually inspiring athletic events, and they were able to share in the days of peace.
The most famous myth surrounding the dolichos surrounds the exploits of the Greek hero Herakles. With the help of the goddess Athena, Herakles was instrumental in the construction of Olympia and the glory of the region.
The Ancient Olympics were a series of athletic events that featured the greatest Greek athletes of their times and an offering of devotion to the Greek Gods. Unlike later monotheistic religions like Judaism and Christianity, the Greeks believed in many gods. Early Olympic games were held in the town of Pisa and Elis, and these spectacular events were performed every four years. Some notable sporting events played at these games included the pentathlon, a 190 meter race called the stadium race, martial arts like combat events called pankration, and events adopted by the current Olympics like the discus throw and the javelin throw.
Like the old and modern Olympics, paintball tournament matches draw international attention and are celebrated as amazing events featuring some of the world's best athletes.
