Discus - Track & Field
The winner of the discus competition is simply the athlete who can throw the discus the farthest. The discus is the oldest of the distance throwing events. The discus had its origins in warfare, like the javelin throw. During ancient Greek times, warriors would throw their shields across a river to lighten the burden they would have to forge across fifth. The discus competitions were an event that honored the strength and sacrifices of these heroic warriors. The discus was an event in the pentathlon in the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C. Homer's Odyssey makes references to Ulysses prowess in discus throwing.

The discus as a track and field event was revived in athletic competitions in Great Britain in the last couple of centuries. In some European field events, athletes threw a wooden discus. The first modern Olympics included the men's discus in Athens in 1896. Women would first compete in the discus in 1928. The art of throwing the circular projectiles was incorporated in the world track and field championships for women and men in 1983.
The Discus Event. The art of throwing this project file involves an explosive burst at the end of a spin out of a crouched position. The discus thrower must throw the projectiles as far as he can while still staying within the throwing circle. At the beginning of the sequence, the thrower stands at the back of the throwing circle, the furthest away from the release point. The athlete begins the sequence of events with his back to the release point and starts off in a crouched position. Next the athlete begins to wind up and he brings the discus that, in the arms move out away from each other. The discus Perot are begins to turn, accelerating in building of energy. The left hand and thrower pushes off powerfully with his right leg of his right arm acts as a counterweight along the axis of the shoulders. His feet leave the ground momentarily. At the end of the one and a half turn rotation, the thrower touches the ground with both feet and the discus is pressed forward, from waste level upward. Up until the release, the trunk and arms are behind the movement of the feet, legs, and hips. To maintain balance, the athlete focuses on a fixed point. At the point of release, the left handed discus thrower uses his left leg to drive and provide the power for the body to finish the rotation and propel the discus forward. The arm whips around and drives upward and the discus is launched through the air.
Like and all other track and field events, the fields and equipment for this event has changed in the last hundred years. The discus of today is composed of wood or similar weighing material. The outer rim of the discus is coated with iron, with inlaid circular metal plates in the center on both sides. During events like the Olympics and the world championships, only discuses supplied by the organizers are permitted for use in their games. The shoes for this event have flexible soles and no cleats, to ensure that players will have an adequate grip on the throwing area service.
Discus throwers are very strong and limber enough to create the whipping motion in the arms and body that enables the discus to travel so far. The sport of discus and paintball require upper body strength and a great capacity for concentration.
