Competitive Aerobics - Elements & Families
While artistic gymnastics is based on agility, speed and power, and rhythmic gymnastics is based on a combination of gymnastics and dance, competitive aerobics is built around aerobic training and cardiovascular fitness. While other gymnastics events like the trampoline require a complex track for the athlete to perform his or her moves, the competitive aerobics athlete performs all of their exercises without the need of any props. These events are short, at 1 minute and 45 seconds, and like the floor exercises in artistic gymnastics, the athletes are expected to come up with their own individual routine, which is judged for perfection of execution, and the originality of the stunts. The competitions are judged based on artistic expression, originality, execution, and .

Competitive Aerobics-Elements and Families - In this event, the athletes have one minute, 45 seconds to impress the judges by performing all of the required elements in an original, well thought out routine. All of the moves are choreographed to music. The choreography and the music must start and end at the same time. During their entire series of moves, the athlete must demonstrate coordination, flexibility, endurance, and power. The gymnasts must perform 12 elements, including 1 from each family.
The families are Dynamic Strength, Static Strength, Balance, Jumps, and Flexibility. The gymnast performs elements from these five families to demonstrate their strength, vertical ability, jumping ability, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The entire aerobic routine will include jumping jacks, high kicks, knee lifts, running, walking, lunges, and whip kicks.
The Five Families. The five families include Dynamic Strength, Static Strength, Balance, Jumps, and Flexibility. Some examples of flexibility exercised will include elements such as splits, and elements of great amplitude. Elements of great amplitude would include exercises where the athlete has one foot on the ground, both hands on the ground, and the other foot sticking straight up in the air. The jumps family elements include somersaults, split jumps, scissor jumps, and straddle jumps. Balance exercises involve positions that must be held, positions that are difficult to hold without their arms or legs moving. One element that requires excellent balance would be where an athlete makes a perfect T with their legs, body, and arms. The athlete has her body and head and limbs parallel to the ground, with one leg at a 90 degree angle to their body, holding her body up. The athlete moves into this position, and then holds this position, which takes incredible balance.
The other two family exercises include static strength and dynamic strength. Most static strength exercises involve the athlete holding their entire body up with one arm. When in a position, the gymnast then holds it there, demonstrating tremendous static strength. Dynamic Strength exercises include the Wenson, A form, circles, free falls, and push-ups.
Equipment. Women wear a one piece Lycra costume that leaves the arms and legs bare. Men are required to wear a 1 or 2 piece stretchy costume. Players usually wear all-white shoes though league guidelines do not specify this. The shoes are sneaker style, with a thick sole for shock absorption and support. The podium for this event is 7 meters on all sides.
