BMX - Cycling
BMX Cycling is a unique series of cycling events that combine a riders speed and power with the skill of acrobatic techniques. While sports like the javelin and the discus crew out of war games and Greek Antiquity, BMX grew from the streets of the suburbs and cities we live in. While some cyclists were focusing on riding further and faster, VMX athletes learned their craft on the concrete islands at grocery stores, park tables, stair railings, and sidewalk curves. BMX cycling is the sport of the people, and is a uniquely American born event. Sports like BMX and skateboarding are vents born in the Americas that now have a following among millions of young athletes all around the world. There are a number of challenging events under the BMX Cycling umbrella. There are BMX races, high flying jump competitions, and acrobatic and free style BMX. The athlete who excels at BMX events must have a unique combination of strength, agility, and a fearlessness to take some tremendous hits and still keep on riding. A partial list of BMX events is summarized below.

The Track Race. The track race is a pure race where the person who reaches the finish line first wins the competition. In the course of the race, the riders must navigate a series of challenging obstacles, including banked curves, staircase, tabletops, and double bumps. A rider must try to keep his bike steady with his wheels parallel to the ground even when airborn. To maintain a high rate of speed, riders try to hit the ground pedaling so that they don't de-celerate, and they try to stay on the ground as much as possible. The Track Race tracks are usually 400 to 500 meters long and have a maximum of 8 riders on the course at a given time. The racer who pulls into the lead has a distinct advantage because of how narrow the lanes are, and how relatively short the race is.
Dirt Competition. While the winners of the track race have the shortest times, the winners of the dirt competition have acrobatic routines that score them the most points. The dirt competition features a bmx rider who performs a series of jumps, spins, and flips over man made bumps. Each dirt competition track has cone or more bumps that are high enough to perform a number of complex tricks off of. One of these dazzling tricks would be the tailwhip is a trick where a rider goes over a major jump while spinning the bike 380° from under him. The rider keeps his torso pointed forward the whole time and his hands on the handle bars while he uses his legs to spin the rest of the bike under him.
Flatland Freestyle BMX. Flatland Acrobatic BMX is a series of tricks that are performed on a flat surface.
Street BMX. Street BMX courses are a series of obstacles, railings, and staircases over a flat hard surface. In this event, riders perform as many breathtaking tricks as they can over these obstacles in a 1:30 minute timeframe.
Street BMX and paintball are both sports that began in the Unite States. While Olympic and world championship games often feature athletes from upper-class backgrounds, BMX & paintball are sports that have built up by the youth of America.
