Beach Volleyball
Volleyball is another example of an American sport that was developed in the 19th and 20th century. Other popular American sports that were developed in the United States include American football, basketball, snowboarding and paintball. While sports like golf grew out of upper class recreational activities, volley ball is one sport that originated from working class athletes. In games like football, all you really need is the ball, and you are ready to go. And with volleyball, all you really need is the volleyball, a netting, and some level ground to play on. The two sports headlined in this article are volleyball, and Beach Volleyball. Both sports are have roughly the same boundaries, with a netting in the middle that the ball must be hit over. The game begins with one player serving the ball over the net from behind their side's base line. From there, the other team has up to the three touches to hit the ball over the net, and to the other side without the ball hitting the ground. The two biggest differences between the two sports is the playing surface that players stand on, and the number of players that are on the court during the game.

Game Conditions. The most obvious differences between volleyball and Beach Volleyball is the court itself, the surface and the stadium. Volley is an indoor sport, and it is played indoors, usually in gymnasiums. Usually, Volleyball games take place indoors, and the playing surface is wooden or hard rubber. These hard indoor surfaces enable players to jump higher, and the nets are 2.43 meters high for the men, and 2.24 meters high for the women. Most indoor volleyball games have 6 man or woman teams, and 25 point games. Because of the hard indoor surfaces, indoor players always wear hard kneepads to cushion impacts when they slide or dive on the ground. While Volleyball is a game played indoors, Beach Volleyball is played outside, on a sandy surface, and usually on the beach. Both sports offer players a great sporting opportunity for their environment and time of year. Volleyball is a great indoor sport, and a great recreation outlet for people in colder climates where people spend half the year indoors. And Beach Volleyball is a great sport for people who enjoy sports, but also want to stay near the beach where they can get refreshed during the hot summer months. Beach Volleyball is played on a sandy surface and a netting separating both sides of the field. The field dimensions are 9m by 18 meters, with a shorter net in the middle to account for the reduced lift on a flimsy surface. Most Beach Volley events feature two person teams.
Beach Volleyball. Beach Volleyball had its first official two on two tournament in 1943 in State Beach, California. The first official body to establish a set of rules, guidelines and leagues for games was the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA). Like sports like alpine skiing and dirt competition BMX, interest in the sport grew quickly many tournaments were played, and even stars began to emerge in the game. Some Beach Volleyball stars include Sinjin Smith, a 5 times world champion from the United States, and the American female tandem, Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan, who dominated in the 1990's. Beach Volleyball became an official event at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Beach Volleyball games are played usually as two on two, sometimes, 4on 4 events. Players play barefoot and are dressed in bathing suits or shorts, with caps or visors to shade out the sun. The game has two referees for signal when the ball hits the ground, or goes out of bounds.
