Baseball is known as America's pastime and is a sport whose modern version originated in the United States. Baseball is a sport of 27 outs, with three outs per inning for nine innings. If the score is tied at the end of nine innings then the game goes on to extra innings. A player makes an out in a game if the player flies out, strikes out, or hits the ball to a fielder who throws it to first before the player can make it to first. A ply out is when a player hits a pitch, and a defensive fielder catches the ball before it gets a chance to hit the ground. A strike out is when a player swings and misses on three pitches before he gets a chance to hit a ball or draw a walk. The 1903 World Series, a media event created by the New York World Newspaper, pitted the Champions of the American League against the Champions of the National League. The game of baseball is played with 25 players on each team, 9 players on the field on defense, and 9 players that go to bat, one at a time, on offense. The players on the field include the pitcher, first base, second base, shortstop, third base, catcher, the right fielder, center fielder, and left fielder. On any give day, the pitcher, the player throwing the pitches to the plate, is usually the most important player on the field. One of the most important phrases in the game is that defense wins championships. This phrase highlights the importance of pitching to win clutch games, when the pressure is on.
Pitchers are the most sought after players during free agency, when a player's contract is up, and he is free to sign with another team. Pitchers are also the most sought after players during trade negotiations. Usually, when two trams are trying to trade with one another, it involves a team contending for the playoffs giving up promising but unpolished young talent for a player who is older but can help them win the year. The team vying for a playoff birth or baseball championship almost always seeks pitching help if they have the young prospects to provide the talent.
