Baseball Playoffs
The Baseball Playoffs are one of the most watched events in major league sports. The Baseball Playoffs occur after the major league season, which is 162 games. In a major league season, a baseball team plays 81 home games at their own stadium, and 81 away games. The most prominent baseball league in the United States and Canada is Major League Baseball (MLB) and draws the greatest baseball players in the world. During the baseball playoffs, 4 teams from the national league, and 4 teams from the American League compete in two playoff rounds.

In the first round of playoffs, the winner of each of the divisions qualifies from postseason participation as well as a wild card team from each league. The wild card from each league is the team with the best record in the league that wasn't a division winner. There are 6 divisions in major league baseball, and three divisions in each league. In the American League, you have the American League East, American League Central, and American League West. In the National League, you have the National League East, Central, and West. At the end of the major league season, the team with the most wins in their division gets a post season birth. The team with the best record that did not win their division gets into the playoffs as a wild card team.
In the first round of the baseball playoffs, the division winner with the highest win total plays the wild card winner in each league. The 2 and 3 seed play each other in the other opening series. Each first round series is a best of five matchups, where the team that wins 3 games first makes it to the next round. The first round of the playoffs is also called the American League Division Series and the National League Division Series. The two Division Series were created after the 1993 season to try to light a spark back into the game of baseball. Prior to this point the baseball playoffs was a one round series where the winner from each league went on to play each other in the World Series. During the one round playoff system, there were only divisions. With the new playoff system, 8 teams make the playoffs instead of 4. In the format, there are so many more teams that are in contention for the playoffs during the regular season, making the regular season much more exciting.
The second round of the playoffs is called the American League Championship Series, and the National League Championship Series. These two series are a best of 7 affair, where the first team to win 4 games goes on to play in the World Series. Perhaps the most memorable series in this round was the 2004 American League Championship Series. This series marked the first time that a team was able to win the series after being down three games to zero. This Series featured the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Up until 2004, it had been 86 years since the Red Sox had a World Series Championship, while the Yankees had 26 major league titles. Some highlights of the 2004 American League Championship Series included a Red Sox comeback in the 9th inning while down 0-3, 2 walkoff hits by Sox Slugger David Ortiz, and a grand slam by Sox centerfielder Johnny Damon in game 7.
