Artistic Gymnastics - Events and Equipment
When a fan thinks of indoor Olympic events, they are generally thinking of Artistic Gymnastics. This series of gymnastic events has produced the game's biggest stars, including Mitsou Tsukahara of Japan, with his unbelievable acrobatics on the rings, and Nadia Comaneci of Romania, with her tremendous stunts in the floor exercises. Nadia Comaneci became a legend when she made 6 perfect scores at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Comaneci's legendary string of perfect scores has never been equaled. While speed events like the 110 meter hurdles and strength events such as the hammer throw each feature athletes with specific athletic abilities, gymnasts are both strong and fast.

Gymnast's Profile and Equipment: Physically, gymnasts are generally small and svelte. The training regimen of female gymnasts and male gymnasts both consist of various flexibility exercises, weight training, and practice towards becoming an Olympic contender. Olympic caliber gymnasts practice for over 4 hours a day, stretching and practicing techniques like the Thomas Flair and the Rulfova. In events like the pommel horse and the rings, male athletes wear Sokal-style pants with foot straps and socks. In most Artistic Gymnastics routines, athletes do not wear socks. Women generally wear leotards and are bare-legged and barefoot. In Men's Artistic Gymnastics events like the rings, male athletes wear hand protectors that make it easier for him to hold the apparatus. Hand protectors make it is easier to grip the parallel bars and handles of the pommel horse. In the men's floor exercises, the athletes usually wear shorts. Listed below are some of the Artistic Gymnastics events and a brief description of the apparatus that the athletes perform these events on.
Parallel Bars: Like the balance beam, athletes perform their entire series of maneuvers over the entire length of the bars. The parallel bars are made of fiberglass reinforced wood, mounted on steel posts. The bars are spaced very closely to one another, and are 1.75 meters from the ground. The bars are spaced far enough apart to allow the gymnast to perform vertical flips between and over the bars. The gymnast uses both hands to perform the vertical flips and he performs various horizontal twists while balancing with one hand on the bars. Different sections of the parallel bars routine include Saltos between the bars, leaps over the bars, and still positions with one or both hands on the bars. The program concludes with the gymnast pushing off of the bars high enough to make at least one vertical aerial flip before sticking a clean dismount. The parallel bars is a male only event.
Uneven Parallel Bars: While in the male bars routine the two bars are 1.75 meters off the ground, with the women's uneven parallel bars they are spaced further apart and are at different heights off the ground. One of the keys to this event is for the whole routine to look like a continuous movement from technique to technique, and from one bar to the other. One of the highlights of this event is the Tchatchev Splits where the athlete swings from the lower bar to the higher one. The uneven bars are at heights of 1.60 meters and 2.40 meters, respectively.
Paintball and gymnastics equipment and gear are both designed to give the athletes a free range of motion so that they can execute their game tactics to perfection.
