5,000 Meter and 10,000 Meter
Wile races like the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 100 meter hurdles rely on game speed and power, the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs will test the endurance of an athlete. The 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs are performed in a 400 meter track and field venue. The Olympics and track and field races go all the way back to Greek antiquity. In the ancient Olympic Games, a track event called the dolichos was performed, where the world's best runners would run a 5,000 meter race as quickly as possible. The sport of long distance running would be revived in Great Britain in the 19th Century. In England, two popular long distance events were the three mile (4,828 meters) and the 6 miles (9,656 meters). These two races were converted to metric meters, with the 5,000 and 10,000 meter. The 5,000 and 10,000 meter became official Olympic events in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. The women's 10,000 meter made its Olympic debut in 1988, in Seoul, one year after it was included in the world championships in Rome. The 5,000 meter for women's track was included in the Olympics for the first time in Atlanta, 1996. Previously, the long distance race for females was the 3,000 meter in Olympic games.

The Competition. The 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter is played on a 400 meter track. Each race has 12 competitions run 200 m and then 12 laps of the track. The 10,000 meter has a maximum of 20 runners run 25 cycles around the 400 meter track. The runners in 400 meter run at a brick pace before accelerating as quickly as possible in the last lap of the race.
Runners are spread out over all 8 laps at the beginning of the race but shoot to the two inside lanes. The athletes stay in the two middle lanes as much as they can so that they don't run a longer race than their competitors. Running a lap or two away from the inside lane could cause a runner to run over and extra 100 meters in a 10,000 meter race.
The 10,000 and 5,000 meters are challenging for two reasons. First, the athletes involved must run hard the entire course. At the same time, champions in their event must learn to stay within themselves and not tire themselves out too quickly. Racers must call upon speed bursts at the appropriate time, such as when they need to pass around a runner in front of them. Past champions in this event knew how to conserve their energy and go into the last lap with enough energy to still make a powerful finish. Winning players know how to force their opponents to break their rhythm and burn out early in the race. Winning players find a way to stay within themselves, stay in rhythm and maintain their focus all the way to the finish line.
Athletic Profile
Runners that are 5'7, and weighing 135 are the prototypical athlete for this event for the males. For the females, the ideal runner would be 5'5 and 115 pounds. 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runners have a strong will and can not be forced to break stride easily. These athletes also have bodies that stand up to exhaustion and extreme physical exertion. To train for these events, athletes run between 10 and 30 miles a day.
The 5,000 meter, 10,000 meter track run, and paintball all favor the well trained and well-conditioned athlete.
