400 Meters - Track & Field
The track and field race, the 400 meters, is a long sprint where the racer does one complete lap of the fields track, running as fast as possible. The origins of this race go back to Exeter College, Oxford, England, and included a quarter-mile race (402m). This distance dropped to 400 meters and was included in the first modern Olympics in 1896. The first version of the race was not run in lanes, which created a lot of pushing and shoving, and jockeying for position. The 400 meters was changed with 8 lanes added in 1908, making it the longest race run in lanes. The women's 400 meters made its Olympic debut in 1964 in the Tokyo Olympics. The world championships were established in 1983, with the 400 meter race as one of its star events.
The 400 meters is a race of amazing athletes where the runners participating run at nearly full speed for a quarter mile. This is a race that favors athletes that are both very strong, and who have a very high pain threshold. Like most other track and field races, the world record in this event has dropped dramatically since the first modern Olympics in 1896, to the present day. There are many theories as to how the human athlete has gotten so much faster in the last 100 years. Some reasons are due to the increased height of the average athlete, protein rich diet, quality of the track, training equipment available to the athlete, and footwear. Shoes worn for track events like the 400 meter are the same as for the 400 m and 200m. The shoes have no heel and a maximum of 11-9 mm cleats. These running shoes are very lightweight and are specifically designed for runners to stay on their toes for the entire race. The cleats at the front of the running shoes are specifically designed to grip the rubber track.
Running the 400 Meters.
- . Athletes start out fast in this race, running with long strides, but they must make sure that they don't surpass 90% of their maximum speed, or they will run out of energy before the end of the race. The runners are staggered to start the race, to compensate for the extra distance of the runners at the outside track. The runners start the race going into the first curve, so that they will end the race, straightaway at the end.
- . The runner increases his speed to maximum velocity towards the end of the first straightaway. The runner must try to stay at near max speed into the second curve. It is important for runner to try to keep his speed constant, and to not let up.
- The . When the runner hits the curve near maximum speed, they lean into the curve as they go around the bend. The outside lane runner gains about 0.15 seconds over the inside lane runner due to the centrifugal force.
- The . After the first 300 meter, the runner experiences an inevitable drop in speed. The challenge is for the runner to maintain a very high speed running all the way through the last straightaway. For an athlete to have a successful run, they must run near the same velocity in 0-100 meters, 100-200 meters, 200-300 meters, and 300-400 meters. The runner should still maintain a speed near maximum at the finish line.
Training in the 400 meters is similar to that in the 200 meters. Both events involve training to run at very short distances (200 meters) and alternating these runs with longer runs (600-1000 meters).
