400 Meter Hurdles - Track & Field
The 400 meter hurdles are race that grew out of force races. Hurdle jumps are popular events in the field of competitive equestrian competitions. The 400 meter hurdles were not one of the racing events celebrated by the ancient Greeks. The 400 meter hurdles became a popular track and field event during the Cambridge - Oxford meet of 1964. The hurdle race was converted to the 400 meter Hurdles for French races at the end of the nineteenth century. The 400 Meter Hurdles became an official track and field events in the Olympics in 1900 in Paris.
The Event. The 400 meter Hurdles is run in lanes, with ten hurdles to overcome for each athlete. Like other hurdle events, the runner can knock down any hurdle as long as this is not done intentionally or if they go outside their own lane. A player is disqualified of they place their feet or leg outside the hurdle.

An athlete must do a number of things two hit the hurdle from the right distance and not the cold outside of their lane. Most runners will take about 23 strides up to the hurdle, and begin their launch for almost 2.4m away. The player must carefully time their jumps so that they jump off with their left leg to clear the gate and not be pulled out of their own lane by centrifugal force. The hurdles in this race are lower than the 100 meter hurdles to compensate for the loss of energy that goes along with such a longer race.
Starting with the first hurdle, athletes must scale a new barrier every 35 meters and conserve their energy so that they are able to finish the race strong. The hurdles are much lower, and are much easier to scale cleanly (CS without touching them).
After scaling the hurdles, athletes usually land about 1.2 m after the crossbar and take between 12 and 18 strides before the next barrier.
Like other sprinter shoes, the sneakers for this event are very light, with cleats on the front. The shoes for the 400 meter hurdles are custom designed for are under who runs on the front of their feet for the whole race. The cleats on a 400 meter hurdles shoe are shorter so that they don't get stuck in the hurdle, and heel is cushioned to compensate for the hard impact of the landings.
The height of the man's hurdle is 0.914 meters, and the height for the women's 400 meter hurdles is 0.762 meters. The height for women is lower to compensate for the shorter stride of the female athlete. The structure of the hurdle itself is L shaped, and the base is weighted to keep the barrier from falling. The barrier is composed of lightweight metal and wood.
Like in most other track and field events, the times of record holders and the 400 meter hurdles has declined steadily since it became an official Olympic event. A world record has changed from 55 seconds in 1908 to about 46 seconds by almost 1995, a decrease of almost ten seconds. Some famous athletes in this event have included Edwin Moses of the United States who dominated from 1972 to 1984, and Yordanka Donkova who medaled in this event in the Seoul Games, 1988.
The prototypical male athlete for this event is about 6'1" and weighs 172 pounds. The ideal female athlete for this event is about 5'5" and weighs about 125 pounds.
