200 Meters - Track & Field
The 200 Meters in track and field has a rich and illustrious history, dating all the way back to 1896, at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. A race called a race one-stadium, ran in the ancient Olympics is very similar to the 200 meters of today. The 200 meter debated in the London Games in 1948.

The 200 meter is a sprint running event where runners go at nearly full speed for the entire race. While the 100 meter race is a straightaway for the entire course, the 200 meter includes a curve and a straightaway. Many sprinters competing in the 100 meter also participate in the 200 meters, such as Marie-Jose Perec and Michael Johnson in 1996 and Carl Lewis in the 1984 Olympics. A race of nearly the same distance was held at the ancient Olympics, though it was run on a straight track. Other post starts in the event have included Valerie Brisco-Hooks in the 1984 Olympics.
The 200 meters is run on a 400 meter track, with the race beginning on a curve and ending on a straightaway. While no runner is able to achieve a maximum velocity for the entire race, Olympic caliber athletes run the entire event at nearly fully speed. The last runner to win gold medals in the 200 meters was Veronica Cambell for its women's and Shawn Crawford for the men's. Other post athletes who have medaled in the event have included Tyson Gay, Tommie Smith, Michael Marsh, Carl Lewis, Fanny Blankers-Koen, and Florence Griffith Joyner, Michael Johnson of the USA is the current record holder with a time of 19.32 seconds. FloJo, at a time of 21.34 seconds, is the current record holder for the women.
- The Race
The race has a staggered start on the curve of the 400M track with the player on the outside lane of the track at the front position. By the end of the race. Before the gun is sounded for race start, the runner sets his feet on blocks and holds the rest of his body up with his hands. When the gun is sounded, the player explodes out of the blocks.
- The Curve
To compensate for the centrifugal force, the runner leans towards the inside of the curve. The curve position of the race make it very challenging to approach maximum velocity but not go off the track. While the difference is minimal, the outside runner does have a slight advantage of about 0.08 seconds over the runner in the inside lane.
The ideal 200 meter runner would be about 5' 9" tall and weigh about 170 pounds. There are more injuries associated with the 200 meter sprint as opposed to the 100 meters, due to the centrifugal force of the turn, and the pressure on the joints.
