100 Meters - Track & Field
The 100 meters in the sport of track and field, is a game of pure speed. The 100 meters of track & field is a popular competition because winners of this event are often considered the fastest women in the world. The 100 meters track event has produced winners who have gone on to become celebrities and household names. Some past winners who have gone on to glory and lucrative sponsorships have included Carl Lewis of the USA, and Florence Griffith-Joyner, also of the USA. The 10 0meters throws all game tactics and game planning out the window, as it is a pure straightaway where the runners go as fast as they can.

The 100 meters is one of the most popular and well known events in track & field. It was one of the original Olympic events in the first Olympics of the modern era. Many experts and fans often consider the winner of the 100 meters at the Olympics as one of the fastest humans in the world. The first 100 meters was held in Athens in 1896 for men, and Amsterdam in 1928 for women. While the 100 meters is the same event now as it was in 1896, the winner of these events are often finishing these races in much faster times in today's game. In fact, in 1896, Thomas Burke of the USA set a record for the 100M with a 12 second time. Today's record holders, Maurice Greene, set the record for the 100M in 9.79. The difference of 2.21 seconds would have left Burke 12.25M behind Green.
There are a number of theories as to why Olympic caliber runners of today are eclipsing the times of runners of 100 years ago. The first reason is the shoes that the runners have available. Today's runner has lightweight sneakers that have an arch support and heel support and cleats to grip the ground to propel the runner along. Another factor is the track that the runner has to sprint on. Today's tracks are made of synthetic rubber or polyurethane. The elasticity of the new materials has also improved the performance of the athletes. Also of note are advances in diet and nutrition. Today's athletes have the best trainers and nutritionists at their disposal to make sure that they are eating a diet that will give them a maximum performance.
The 100 meters sequence of events has 7 key steps that an athlete goes through from the start of the race to the finish.
- The set. The set is the runners stance as he prepares for the start of the race. During the set, the runner plants both feet, sets his hands, put his posterior in the air, and waits for the start signal.
- Start. The runner explodes forward as the starter's pistol fires.
- Acceleration. The runner continues to accelerate until he reaches his maximum speed.
- Maximum speed. The runner reaches his maximum speed at around the 60th meter.
- Maintaining speed. The runner attempts to maintain his maximum speed for as long as possible, and keep his stride amplitude at maximum.
- Decline in Speed. All runners exhibit a slight decrease in speed at around the 80th meter, even world record holders in the event.
- Finish Line. The timer is stopped for the runner when his chest crosses the finish line.
