100 & 110 Meter Hurdles
The 100 & 110 Meter Hurdles are popular races of speed and agility. While the 100 meters is an all out race with a consistent straightaway, the 100 and 110 meter hurdles are run in lanes, and there are 10 hurdles in each lane. In these highly specialized and technical races, the runners constantly alternate between sprinting and jumping obstacles. A runner is not penalized for inadvertently knocking over a hurdle, but will be penalized if it is judged that they knocked over the hurdle on purpose. An athlete will also be penalized if he places his foot or leg outside the hurdle.

The 100 and 110 meter hurdles have a long and illustrious history, going back all the way to 1864. This track was first made popular as an official event in the Cambridge-Oxford track and field meet in 1864. These first hurdle competitions were 120 yard hurdles. These competitions became popular around England, and then much of "western Europe by the end of the 19th century. At the end of the century, The French added a few centimeters to the race, converting it to a metric distance, making it a 110 meter race. The 110 meter hurdles was one of the original track and field events of the first modern Olympics in 1896. The hurdles was added as a women's hurdles race in the Munich Olympics in 1972. The Olympic event for hurdles was added as a 100 meter race, to account for the fact that women's strides are about 1 meter shorter than men's. In addition to the women's version being a 100 meter hurdles race, the height of the hurdles is also lower than that of the men's. The women's hurdles have a height of 0.84m while the men's hurdles have a height of 1.067m. The height of the female hurdles was actually much lower than those of today, but has been raised due to female athlete's development of strength and speed.
5 Techniques for the 100 and 110 meter hurdles.
- Start and takeoff. The runner takes off out of a crouch position, like the start of a 100 meter race. But unlike the 100 meter, the runner aims for stride speed rather than length. The runner accelerates as much as possible in his first 4 strides, then prepares to jump by straightening his torso during the following 4 strides. If he times his strides correctly, he will take off 1.95 to 2.40 meters before the hurdle.
- Flight. When in the air, the runner rotates his torso forward and pulls both feet up as high as he can.
- Landing. The athlete lands about 1M after the hurdle. He lands on one foot and immediately positions his body for the next stride.
- Run Between Hurdles. If times right, the runner accelerates for 3 strides. The last stride before the next takeoff is shorter and higher. The winner is at his highest point of acceleration between the hurdles and stride rhythm must never be interrupted.
- Lost Hurdle and Final Sprint. The runner must land on his lost jump to put himself in a position to reach his maximum speed before the end of the race.
While the sport of paintball relies on team play, the 100 & 110 meter hurdles are individual competitions.
