Maximize Your Team's Financial Position
"Pro Paintball isn't about the money or the fame. I realized that early and promised myself playing with my friends was worth more than the little amount of money I could make playing somewhere else." Rob Landry, Hurricanes, Paintball Games International, Issue May 2007.

There are numerous ways for paintball teams to maximize their financial position. The most obvious way is to win championships. In the May issue of PGI magazine, Dynasty and the Naughty Dogs were the stars of full page ads announcing that they were world series champions of their respective leagues. The Naughty Dogs were congratulated as 06 ASPL World Champions. In this full page ad, Smart Parts was advertised as their tournament sponsor. Team Dynasty was congratulated as the 06 NPPL Series Champions. In this full page ad, their sponsors, Smart Parts were displayed, along with a mention of their Shocker Marker. Some paintball teams have team markers that all players use as a part of their sponsorship deal. Other professional paintball teams include the Chicago Evil Factory Team, Miami Rage, Edmonton Impact, Las Vegas LTZ, and Jersey Authority.
The best teams have a relatively easy time generating multiple revenue streams, managing to secure multiple sponsorship deals through their high profile successes. But not all paintball teams have the benefit of full page articles about their team or interviews from team stars. Many up and coming teams are constantly searching for new ways to make up for their travel expenses, room and board costs, paintball gear maintenance, and weekly cases of paint. Competitive teams work out and practice several hours a day, and can sometimes go through thousands of cases in a week. The cumulative costs of these expenses can really add up, and teams will sometimes need to get creative to at least cover the expenses.
One thing teams try to do is partner up with businesses in close proximity to their headquarters, most notably local fields. The New England Hurricanes generate a large portion of their income through their partnership with Boston Paintball. Boston Paintball has two field and four stores, and enjoy their high profile partnership with the New England Hurricanes.
Though the pro teams get the glamorous interviews in magazine such as Crossfire Paintball Magazine, the majority of players fall into the rookie, novice and amateur divisions. Support for their teams often comes from the grassroots level, their local paintball fields. Teams at the beginner division do not have enough exposure to generate interest from the national manufacturers, so they must begin at their local playing field. Another source of income may not be glamorous but may be necessary. Players can cover costs by working referee and other odd jobs at their local field. Players may referee games on the weekdays, clean indoor surfaces, and clean the staging area in their outdoor complexes.
