The Patrol
The Patrol is one phase of the immediate action drill where paintball players must learn to make quick judgments to sudden events on the field. The patrol is an exercise that serves to facilitate team play and makes teammates respond quickly to events together on the field. During the patrol, a paintball team moves together as a group, pacing themselves silently until a scout encounters the opposition. What quick decisions must a scout make when he encounters the opposition? First the scout must decide if his team has been spotted or not.

If your teams pointman concludes that one of his teammates has been spotted, he will call out "contact, front!" to give direction. The point man will then scurry for cover and then begin shooting at the opposition. When his teammates hear his signal, they will repeat the "contact front!" call and then flank to point man is their own cover points and begin fire. Next the team will continue to engage the opposition until they feel confident enough to come out of their cover points and advance towards the enemy.
In this immediate action drill, the heads up decision of the point man to make the spot of the enemy, call contact, front! and quick decisions to start shooting has helped his teammates in a number of ways. First, the discovery of the opposition and call informed his teammates that they were in harm's way and caused them to find cover points to avoid enemy fire. And also, by shooting at the opposition, he was able to force the opposition into a defensive position and by his team enough time so that they would be able to find cover.
The patrol is an exercise for spotting the opposition, reacting quickly, and making gradual advances into enemy territory. There is a number of new calls associated with the patrol that are used in the game so that paintball players are able to communicate with each other. A brief list is provided below.
Contact, front! "Contact, Front!" is first called by the point man that has spotted the opposition. If the point man makes this call, it usually means that his team has been spotted first. Upon hearing this call the rest of the team repeats the call and run for cover.
Coming Through! Coming Through is a call you will h ear from your own teammate so that you don't shoot at one of your own. Your teammates will call "coming through!" when he starts moving forward, so as to not get eliminated in a friendly fire accident.
Loading! The call "Loading" is an alert to his teammates that he is loading,, and not just being lazy. You wan to always be confident that your own teammate will have your back in the heat of battle. If you come under fire and you do not hear your teammate helping out in a counter attack, you would want to know the reason for this slight. When a player is done, loading, he will call out "Up!" or "Ready!".
